i just want to load some music onto an sd card  and add onto the hdd.  anybody any recommendations on which card to buy.  ive tried on a sdhc card and says will not read

Have you tried a 2GB SD (not HC) card? The early versions didn't support 32GB SDHC but a firmware upgrade might allow it so press the old Setup button for 10 seconds and have a look at the Version Information.
