Looking to get into a Yeti

Featured Replies

When the Yeti first came out I thought that the 1.8 TSI 4x4 would cover all the bases as a family car but I have since started driving taxis to enable me to be a full time Dad so I bought a Superb to be the taxi.

As a result the CRV is rather redundant as the Superb will now be getting a towbar to take on caravan towing duty.

The CRV is getting a bit long in the tooth and it is starting to cost a fair bit in servicing and repairs so we are looking at possible replacements at the moment.  Ibiza FR 1.2 TSI, Fabia Monte Carlo with the same engine, both new or as I recently became aware the Yeti at 6 months old to a year is within budget.

We are going to look at a 13 plate 1.2 TSI Elegance at the weekend and I must admit I am looking forward to it.  It does have 10k on the clock but that is still 100k less than the CRV so I am happy enough.

I have looked at the mpg thread and the buying guide which reckons the Elegance, with its Xenons, seems to be a good choice, particularly on back roads.

Also the Elegance has the same stereo as my Superb so the layout is very familiar.  Is there anything I should be looking at on this age of car?

Not really, it's almost new and still has over two years warranty.

Assuming you haven't test driven it yet, just make sure the performance is OK at speed.

The 1.2tsi is nippy up to around 50-60mph, but then the brick like aerodynamics slow it down a bit as it doesn't have the torque of the 1.8 petrol or any of the diesels.

As long as that's OK (and it is for most people) then it should be fine.

Yetis don't seem to suffer with any regular issues that you'd need to look for on such a new vehicle.

I've had my 1.2TSI Elegance just coming up to a year now and its got 7000 miles on the clock, so not dissimilar to the one you are going to look at. It has given me no problems whatsoever, not even a squeaky bit of trim. I was a bit worried whether a 1.2 litre petrol would be up to the job but it is has been more than adequate for my needs; it might not suit someone intending to do long, high speed runs on a regular basis (but there are the higher power diesels for this) but as a general run-around often with four adults and a big dog on board it's been great on country lanes, up and down hiss and, accepting its limitations, runs along the motorways. The lights are excellent by the way - a revelation as its the first time I've had Xenons. I'm sure you will enjoy your test drive at the weekend.

Just to endorse what Paul has said, my 61 plate has 12k on the clock now, it's been excellent. I do a motorway run around once a week and while it's not got the oomph my 2.0 PD Octavia had, it is perfectly capable of cruising at the legal limits - and frankly with motorway traffic how often do you need more than that anyway?

Reliability wise I have been unlucky, the air con has failed twice and needed replaced and my sunroof was helpfully plumbed into the interior causing a lot of mould. All fixed quickly and without question under warranty though.  It's the first car in a long time I'll be keeping beyond the three year point, though that's partly driven by the lack of any pay rises since 2008 mind you. But if I wasn't happy with it then no matter what the finances I'd be moving it on.

7000k  - kilometers?

7000k  - kilometers?

or  it's a very high mileage yeti

or  it's a very high mileage yeti

Yes - 7,000,000 would qualify as such. :giggle:

Ah, if I thought I'd have done 7,000,000 miles in the first year I'd have gone for a diesel, or perhaps dual fuel diesel/warp drive, although I believe those warp drives can be a b****r to get serviced at the local dealer. Now corrected to 7,000 miles. But I still think its a darn fine car, even at less than inter-galactic mileages.
