Wheel help?

Featured Replies

Hi again guys and girls.

Tomorrow I may be a Skoda Octavia owner. Mk2 57 plate estate.

Been looking at wheels.

Would a staggered set of: 18" x 8.5" ET 45 /9.5"  ET 42, 5 x 112 with 215/40 front 225/40 rear tyres work?

Thanks in advance

Tom

Plenty of stretch but they'll work :)

Oh yeah! Will they work with lowering springs/coil overs??

Depends how low you want it :D

Why not just fit the correct size tyres for the wheels?  Or, alternatively, the current size wheels for the tyres?

Because those wheels will not fit under the arches with correct size tyres.

Hmmm... Not crazy low... Maybe another 30mm??

Cos that would be a bit boring... and far too easy! :p

I run 215/35/18's on my 8.5j's nice stretch but not a lot of clearance between rim & road so I'll be moving up to 215/40's.

As for lows it depends how low you want to go? I'll be running low soon ;)

Have you got a pic of your stretched tyres please? Whats the ride like on them... bearing in mind I have 20" alloys on my current lowered Mondeo with 35s on.

So the 9.5" rears will be good?

Rides ok, feel a lot more bumps n humps etc but driving wise they've been sound. Never once have I thought about them popping off etc. not tramlining either.

What offset are they?

8.5x18

ET25

Stretched seems to be another word for distorted!  Tyre manufacturers do have recommended rim sizes for a reason.  Tyres are not designed to run with side walls distorted as shown.

So why do you do it?  What do you see as the advantage?  I am really genuinely interested to know why some-one would mistreat tyres in this fashion.

Wheels ordered! Should be here by Monday! Tyres being ordered ASAP!

Now what option for lowering??

Why are they mistreated? Because there fitted on a wider rim. Load of cobblers!

There as safe as they would be fitted to a narrower wheel. For me it's the fact that when I get Coilovers fitted I can go that extra bit lower and achieving the look I want from the car, the same for others than run stretch I'd assume.

If everyone stuck to what the manufacturers fitted to cars as standard there'd be no modding and it would be a boring place tbh

I was referring to the tyre manufacturers' recommendations.  Each tyre manufacturer may have slightly different recommendations for minimum, optimum and maximum wheel width for a particular tyre width but mostly they all agree that the tyre width should always match or exceed the wheel width.  The tyre manufacturers carry out extensive testing to arrive at their recommendations.  On what data do you base your statement that the tyres are safe if fitted to rims under the minimum size recommended?  As this is a mod you do of course declare it to your insurers and they accept it?  Are these tyres fitted to those wheels by a commercial tyre supplier?  I asked my local tyre supplier and they were adamant that they will not fit tyres to rims that are not within the recommended width range for that tyre.

I am all for modifying cars and I am often impressed with the trouble and expense many car owners go to when modifying their cars.  The results, whether for performance improvement or for appearance reasons, are often impressive and an obvious improvement.

You seem to be saying that fitting tyres that are too narrow for the wheels is to deliberately distort the tyre shape so that a combination of a lowered car and wide wheels can be obtained.  Thanks for sort of answering my question.  However, the black car shown in the photos earlier in this thread doesn't seem to be lowered, so what is the advantage there? From memory the Construction and Use regulations for cars state that no part of the tread of a tyre may be visible when viewed from above.  The front wheel of the car in the photo looks like it could possibly be illegal - if so, and if stopped, then £30 (or is it now £60?) fine + 3 points for each wheel contravening the regulations.

It isn't lowered yet, last minute house move put a stop to my spending.

The photos are deceiving, all the tread sits within the arch which is legal.

Crazy stretch I'm not a fan of and I'm not condoning anything but you look at drifting for example, they run stretched tyres and the speeds and entries they do tells me there's more tolerance in the tyres and your just going off recommendations.

Anyone??

Anyone??

Yes they will fit. I had 9,5x19" ET45 rears on my own car with no problems so you can easily put those 9,5x18" on your car.
