What Mileage Does the VRS Suspension Wear out

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

At what millage will the shocks and springs on a vrs typically wear out?

I have to be honest here....... Like many of you I have wanted to lower my car since I bought it (2 years ago). And now I'm looking for an excuse to justify getting myself a set of AP springs and shocks! Or I'm even half tempted to stretch to the H&R comfort kit or the Koni Sport kit on demon tweeks depending on what's more recommended.

So my car has done 70000 miles and is a 54 plate.

Cheers everyone,

Pinchy :)

About a length of string I'd say mate :p

But seriously it differs car to car. I'd say once over 100,000 you would benefit from new suspension and notice the difference.

Depends how it's used? Smashed about round a track and stuff and it'll need attention quicker than if it trots along the motorway

Also, shagging in the back won't help :D

Haha I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad about that. That's another 2/3 years by the miles I do so I think I may as well just go for it now!

So my options are:

AP Suspension Kit 25mm

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/suspension-kits/car/skoda/fabia-00-07-vrs/ap-suspension-sports-suspension-kits-lowers-front-25mm-lowers-rear-25mm

Or I could just about stretch to these (maybe on finance!)

H&R Comfort 30mm

Koni Sports suspension 30mm

What's the opinions on these shocks & springs?

Just seen the other comments come up after I posted! Well I don't know what the first 50k miles were like as the car wasn't mine back then. So the 20k miles I've had the car for have just been ordinary mixed driving A and B roads mainly! To be fair there doesn't seem to be any problems with them I'm just trying to justify spending the money haha but I think I've made my mind up on upgrading anyway :p

Had car 9 years, done 125k+ of track days, motorways, mountains and many other types of roads and still on original springs. Everything else i'm sure has been changed at least once. I need to check my service reports. :D

Depends how much of a drop you want, really. AP are very good, made by KW in Germany, plus, it'll save some cash to blow on a RARB ;)

Had my car motd yesterday and has just hit 100k. Tester said all the suspension was original but still tight with no leaks etc. As stated it really depends what kind of life the cars had.

Ordered my AP kit last week (due to the 4x4 looks and boat like handling rather than thinking the suspension was tired). Was meant to be here today but didnt turn up so hoping ill be here tomorrow and on the car within the next week. Couldnt justify spending more than £240 on suspension for a cheap hack tbh but there are better kits out there if you want to throw money at it

Just bought my vRS on 100k and it feels "ok". Not crashy or really sloppy or broken, just feels like it could do with a refresh to get the most out of it. Certainly if it was to go on track straight away it would feel like a wallowy old hector.

MattH I wasn't aware they did an interest free option?! Very "interested" (sorry) if they do haha.

Well recently I a thought.... I bloody love my car and I can see myself keeping it for a long time! So I'm going to make it the way I want it to be now starting with the suspension :).

Not looking for a massive drop just a solid set up that looks better and will be built to last. This is why I'm considering the Koni and now the Bilstein setups. But in the future when sometime wears out on these I guess it will be costly to replace the parts!

If its just a daily hack, id say save your money and go for the ap kit but at the end of the day its your car/money so your choice. Also if you cant fit the kit yourself, dont forget to add the cost of new top mounts and fitting aswell as other parts you may require on top. A £500-£600 kit could turn into £700-£800 once fitted and im not sure youd notice much difference unless your planning alot of track days

Good advice to be fair I had forgotten about the things that go with it top mounts, bump stops etc. I won't be fitting this myself last time I checked on a price it for lowering springs it was £80 I believe. Price should be the same / similar for shocks and springs shouldn't it?

Thats a good price tbh and yeah should be the same. Dont forget full wheel aligment after aswell

My mates front spring snapped at 70k miles

So there isn't any definitive rule.

After 100k i would say things will be getting a little 'tired' but should still be fully functional

Thanks for all the help so far guys. Recently turned freedom for that exact reason

Right....

I'm seriously going to do this now (well by the end of March as my insurance is up for renewal then).

I've found plenty of info on the AP kit (seems to be the best kit for the price) and also the Bilstein B12 kit (seems to be the best kit full stop!).

But has anyone had any experience with these? How does the adjustable dampning work? I'm no mechanic and I just want something that can just be fitted and no faffing afterwards.

Koni Sport Suspension Kit (H&R Springs & Koni Adjustable Shocks).

Also what other items will I need? Links & part numbers will be great.

From what I have read:

Top Strut Mounts & Bearing

Mount: 22930

Bearing: 22498

Bump Stops:

Seat Ibiza Cupra Rear Bumpstop: 1007420009

http://www.vwspares.co.uk/ibiza02_suspension_rear.php

What about front bump stops and rear mounts?

Cheers,

Pinchy

I could really use some advice here please :)

Yea Demon Tweeks indeed do a 12 months interest free option.

My vote is still the Eibach and Bilstien option.

I used it to get Milltek cat back, my Eibach springs and some tyres. Came to around £700 iirc.

Thanks for the heads up on this Matt! I emailed and they are happy to provide the 0% ? .

So I might well be purchasing the B12 kit! I don't fancy the Koni kit as I cant be bothered (don't understand) with adjustable dampers lol.

Can anyone help with this please:
