SMF Rattle

Featured Replies

Just had a single mass flywheel and 5 paddle clutch put on yesterday and Jesus, what rattle it gives off on tickover.

I watched a couple videos on YouTube and they all seem to do it, just wondered if there's a way to tone it down a little?

Unfortunately it's a common thing with a SMF setup, only way to quieten it down is to go back to the DMF as the DMF has a lot more dampening properties, hence it's a lot less noisy.

You will soon get used to it though. HTH

Yeah! I can just sit there with the clutch in and it's quiet but it's not ideal!

Where did you get the flywheel and clutch from mate

Does sound crap imo :(

The one thing I really don't like about my car is the noise from SMF.

Mmmm

Not one of them sold as "silent" was it?

Ive read you can put slightly more oil in the gearbox. Didnt really work for me. Mind I only put 3oo-500ml more in.

In the end the link in my signature tells it all lol

I got it from GNJ Motorsport!

How heavy was the SMF?

There are lighter and heavier ones.

The lighter ones are more noisy.

There's a link to it. It's just something you get used to I think. Says it weighs between 8-14kg depending on application.

OH DEAR.

youll get used to it Im sure....

presume there is a breather point you use to put the extra in from the top somewhere? :)

Lol no you raise front of car only and pour in.

I measured tge amount I put in as I didnt fance poping a seal.

Ive since drained it out so am back to correct level.

yeah i've got a SMF too and it shakes the car so hard at 2k rpm that you can't look out of the rear view mirror, other than that its ok, when i have the money i'll go back to dmf, until then i'm stuck with it and just hoping it doesn't shat a few bearings

Pete

Sounds to me like they aren't balanced. Every petrol car I've owned has had a solid flywheel, the old MGZR 2.0TD from donkeys ago was single mass too, i seem to recall none of them rattling their chuff off.

Why would it?

Vibrations should not be that bad surely?

The rattling is caused because a DMF takes away vibration from the engine, when you fit a SMF the vibration is transferred to the gearbox and it's the gearbox that rattles, not the flywheel :)

Yea thats right vag 6 speeds are worse due to 2 shafts or something unlike the 5 speeds that are all on one. Something like that.

Even tho cg advertise it as silent. Hence why I went with them. Up till I went back to std I didnt realise just how bad the kit was.

I had mine on my car for around 6 months and gave up on it.

So glad I did too.

You back on dual mass then?

Yea mate.

I was advised by them to go smf and dual friction due to my needs and it would remain like std with a possible slight increase in transmission chatter but most were silent.

I voiced my concerns 2 days after fitting and took it as normal.

Eventually I bit the bullet and swapped it for std which they said wouldnt cope.

Idea was to sell the kit on. On removal we noticed it was excecivly worn and things were not right with it. Also that the car was a lot more responsive to drive not just quieter.

I tried being reasonable with cg and they posted this which I was very unhappy about.

I am still finding the std setup brilliant with no trouble at all.

Done more miles with it now too and still great.

I just couldn't cope with the embarrassing noise at low rpm.

I have a cg smf and dual clutch and it's absolutely perfect no judders or engine shake, I kind of like the chatter but that's me :)

So for all of us that maybe thinking of convering to smf, what are the alternatives if we want to run more power?

Dmf is out of the question because of the cost but what about a t5 conversion that I've heard a few people talk about? or would that just be the same as a SMF conversion?

Yeah I got it for £600! It is noisy as hell but it'll take the power when the time has come
