08 Octavia Scout - glow plug light flashes after 20 minutes driving

Hiya, Any help welcome.

 

Recently bought a 08 Octavia Scout. Drove it back from the dealer no problem with no lights flashing (30-40 min journey) but since then its sat on the drive for nearly a month.

 

Today went on 30 minute journey, mainly motorway. After 20 minutes driving the glow plug light (and only that light) started flashing and the car went into limp mode. Pulled off the motorway, turned engine on and off again, light stopped flashing on restart and I had full power back, continued the 10 or so minutes to my destination.

 

On way back home 2 hours later, 20 minutes into the journey, same thing happens.Glow pulg light flashing, limp mode. Pull off, restart car,  full power back and no lights, I finish journey.

 

Any bright ideas people? I've done a bit of investigation on here and can't see the same symptoms, but if I've missed something then apologies and just point me at the relevant post.

 

Car history is that it's an ex-police Accident Investigation Unit, so very high mileage (130k), but almost certainly all motorway and been well maintained. The reason it stood on the drive for a month is I was waiting for the papers to come back from the DVLA changing the taxation class from "POLICE".

 

Kind regards, and like I say, any help welcome. The plan is to take it to the local Skoda dealer to get the fault code read, but I was wondering if there were any ideas on cause.

The glow plugs light is the "something's gone wrong" light. I would have look in the VCDS/diagnostics forum and see if anyone near you has VCDS and could scan the car for you, will be a damn site cheaper than going to a dealer - they will charge you £40-50.

Firstly get the fault code read by a friendly Briskodian (They will do it for beer money rather than £50 - £70 a dealer will charge.

At that mileage it could be EGR or gummed up turbo vanes

I had this on my 08 Scout a few weeks ago.

 

As has been mentioned the flashing glowplug light has many, many different causes, together with the EML (Engine Management Light).

 

I suspected the usual G235 DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) sensor.

 

Local garage read the fault code and traced the fault down to some duff wiring. A quick repair and all was good again.

 

The most common glowplug light faults are related to (but not limited to):

 

1) Brakelight switch
2) Throttle position sensor
3) Exhaust gas pressure sensor
4) G235 Exhaust temperature sensor bank 1
5) Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
6) Blocked turbo vanes

Many thanks to all above. However irritating on a financial front, I'll have to take it into a garage as time right now is a bit of an issue. Specifically, I'm getting married in a week and a half and right now I need someone to take the car away and fix it, don't have time to deal myself :-( Annoying, but I think the wedding comes before the car!

Update: Still uncorrected at this point. Garage I (Main Dealer) replaced Turbo actuator valve but problem still remains (flashing glowplug light + limp mode after around 20 mins driving from cold). The car does, however, run a lot better (when it's not in limp mode!) so I'm not going to argue the point about the £50 cost of replacement of a part that clearly wasn't the main problem. Garage I said that if not the valve it would need a replacement Turbo at £1300+ cost.

 

It's booked in to Garage II ( a local independent specialist) Monday for a second opinion, and also because their quote for replacing the Turbo (if it comes to that) is £1200 all-in and frankly £100 is £100. :-)

Ouch, don't pay main dealer prices for a turbo.

 

Find a trusted local VAG specialist.

 

Why isn't the supplying dealer paying for this, considering you've only had the car a month and during that time it's been sat on your drive?

Update. Local VAG specialist has solved problem. Split in vacuum hose. They have charged me £2.85 for the part :-).

 

The reason I'm solving this myself is that we bought the car off a slightly cowboy dealer (not main, franchised, though by the tell of it they are not much better) who unfortunately was selling the only Octavia Scout in my price range at a time when I needed the car in a hurry. As it's an ex-police accident investigation unit I figured it would have been well maintained and a good bet.

 

Dealer gave me an aftermarket RAC 3 month warranty, which only covers the Turbo in specific circumstances, and RAC require you to remove said turbo and send it to them for analysis **before** they will agree to pay out for a new one. Obviously one can bet that the specific circumstances that they cover will never occur! If you google "RAC Warranty" and a string of swear words you get a lot of hits!

 

Also, I'm getting married in three days and could do with the car for the honeymoon.

 

Yes I can go and have a blazing row with the dealer, possibly threaten sale of gods act, "fit for purpose", etc, but the legal situation is not great with second hand cars as you have to prove that the fault was existing when you bought it. Then have another row with the warranty company, but it's not going to get me a working car in three days and sometimes just paying the money is better than losing sanity, when I have more than enough other things to worry about right now!!

 

Obviously the plan was to buy well in advance, but I had reckoned without the "police" tax class delaying things.

Ah, that makes more sense then. 2.85 well spent :)
