Tyres and brake pads

Featured Replies

Went to get tyres changed today and the guy told me the brake pads are non-existent, how much am I looking at to get new ones and labour thanks.

The price of pads vary on make.

Id hope the job would not be any more than 1 hours labor and a test drive.

Obviously this is if everything goes to plan and they encounter no problems.

Changing the pads is a piece of cake, you could easily do it on your own as long as you have the correct tools. It's simply undoing 2 cap heads and lifting the caliper off, removing the pads, greasing up a little with copper coating then pushing the piston back with a G-clamp and placing new pads in. There should be a walk through on here somewhere. The difficult part is bleeding the brakes, that's a two man job and requires a certain way to do it.

Agree with all apart from the bleeding... buy a Gunson Eazibleed and you can do a proper job on your own.

OP; Check the fabia 1 guides section, techie1 done a thread for upgrading to 312's, but you can use that to change the pads (and discs if needed)

Excuse the yoda moment, but if the brake pads are non existent, then may I suggest you have a careful look at the discs; if the pads were worn down really badly, the discs could also be damaged.

What sort of place were you at getting tyres, a proper place or a place that uses selling tyres as a means of selling you lots more?

No harm in a proper place pointing out that your car had duff/unserviceable brakes, when that is correct, but is this what happened?

Just a couple of questions in case you are being ripped off by a fast fit operation.

I know what you mean, I've had friends of recent who have had work either carried out or be advised and given a quote for work and it has been ridicules prices.

One weakness in my line of questioning is, if the OP does not know much about cars, then he will not be in a position to question the advice given!

Edit:- advice given by the tyre place I mean.

Do you have a family member with any knowledge regarding motor vehicles? maybe they could check before taking it somewhere? Failing that find a recommended garage. Brake fluctuating is felt through the pedal.

I think that you should get your car checked over and serviced once a year, you can't rely on all MOT places failing cars for next to no friction material on brake pads, I think that the accepted limit for MOT pass on thickness alone is only 2mm. In the past most MOT places would issue an advisory if the pads were over half worn, but things seem to have changed, so if the brakes work they will pass.

The comments made earlier about worn pads could mean you also need new discs is correct - could be bigger money time - if the advise is good and honest.

I and probably others are not trying to take the "moral high ground" here, but to run a car takes quite a bit of money if you plan to make it safe for you and more importantly other road users it is ultimately your responsibility to keep it roadworthy at all times - and that can only be done in a proactive manner.

No not really mate

Is brake fluctuating a bad problem and is it easily explainable?

This was about 4 months ago the mot was

Jay, when I first got my fabia before my monte my brakes needed changing for the MOT, my dad use to be a mechanic years ago and walked me through it, when I finished it I realised it was easier than I thought. You can't go wrong, the bottom end of the caliper slots over something then you push the top in end which you then put the two cap heads in. You could either pay labour, watch and get it sorted or try it yourself with an experienced mechanic but you don't really learn unless your getting the hands dirty.

In a nutshell a pulsating foot pedal. It can be caused by a number of things.

Condition of disc's worn, warped ect. Pads, Caliper.

If you not confident in doing it yourself find a recommended garage. Explain your situation.

Cheers guys big help!

If you don't know much about parts and tyres, how about this as a starter;

Brake discs and pads circa £75-£100 from Euro Car Parts or carparts4less are around £75 for both

Tyres, try Camskill, around £64 for a Uniroyal Rainsport 3, then £10-15 each tyre for fitting including valve and balancing

Obviously you can oY less if you choose cheaper brands.
