Speaker Upgrade

Featured Replies

After a quick search on here I cannot find any definitive answers to my questions regarding upgrading the speakers in my SE.

1) what size are the front speakers?

2) what depth do they need to be? Do I need shallow speakers?

3) same as 1 but for the rear speakers.

4) is there any wiring adapters I can buy to save myself chopping the factory block off?

I upgraded the speakers on my old car (206) with some JBLs. But I had to drill out the rivets holding the factory speakers in and install the JBLs using self tappers. Will this be the same with the Fabia ones?

I have seen people writing about MDF rings, what purpose do these serve?

Ta for any help :)

When you take the door card off, you will see that the front speakers at moulded into the plastic speaker adapter. To replace the fronts you will need new adapters that are ready to take a speaker.

Mk4 golf adapters on eBay fit, are around £10 and come with the adapters that you desire to save any chopping.

The adapters are made to fit a 6.5" speaker and as far as I'm aware, they need to be sallow speakers :)

Good luck

Thanks for your help mate.

Something like this?

eBay item number: 330949489566

Fronts are 17cm if I remember rightly, unless you get some very slim ones like vibe slicks you will need the adaptor ring things.

For the rear speakers I got some pioneer direct fit ones, which are 10cm. You lose the rear tweeters, but they were in a dreadful place anyway

Thanks mate.

Looking at these for the front,

What you think?

Can you link me to the rear pioneer ones you have? Or do you have a model number?

Edit: And how did you fit them? Did you need a wiring harness/adaptor to connect to the factory loom? Or did you chop the loom and wire in yourself?

Think it was ts-1002i

Been a few years since I ordered them though

1) & 2) 155-175mm (6-6.5"). On Golf MK4 autoleads spacers, max depth is 62mm. At that depth the magnet is sitting on the glazing bar behind the speaker hole. Pay attention to mounting depth. Doesn't mean you NEED shallow mount speakers but a lot of standard kit is probably a tad deep.

3) & 4) Forget it. The rear set-up should only be used for minor fill. The mounting locations are crap/flimsy for the woofers and the tweeters are in the rear door handle covers.

5) Yes -  rivets.

6) MDF rings are an alternative mounting to plastic spacers (i.e. Autoleads). In theory better/more solid but require more work to mount and moisture proof.

If doing anything more complex, get someone more experienced to help or shove it at a shop or auto-elec to do the work.

Both sets you've linked to are co-axials. The Fabia uses component sets front and rear. Generally components sound better.

Look at the Alpine SXE-1750S or similar.

Next question: Have you changed or upgraded the head unit? The factory speakers can sound good with a higher power h/u - provided they say solidly mounted and don't start buzzing.

Yea I knew they were coaxials. I had JBL ones in my old car and they sounded fine. I found from my old car that installing components would require some chopping of the standard tweeter mounting to make after market ones fit.

I have the pioneer appradio 3 in my car.

I was asking similar questions a while back about an audio upgrade, as I'm really fed up of the tinny sounds through the standard system.

I'll be going for components when I do it.

Mini-thread hijack, but how do you mount aftermarket tweeters? Does anyone have any pictures with the tweeter cover removed so the standard (or aftermarket) setup can be seen please??

Matt, have you put any thought into a small amount of soundproofing too?

That's pretty special!

Huge amount of effort gone into that, and looks very professional too!

I Think you would prob have to cut a hole into the original tweeter cover to fit the aftermarket tweeter into. Then perhaps cover the tweeter cover so it looks tidy.

It's a bit much work for my needs really. All I'm after is a bit louder with less distortion than the standard set up.

I haven't thought about soundproofing as yet, but I will prob get some dynamat for the doors.

Just wanted to know if the dimensions of the speakers I've linked will be suitable to fit in the doors without fowling the window and/or other electrical components within the door.

You should be fine with the adaptor too. I have pioneer comps up front.

Don't suppose you have any pics of your tweeter location/set up at all?

I don't sorry. I know the tweeters are a slightly different size so my brother used a couple of flexible cable wrap things to hold them in place. Still going strong 2-3 years later :)

Behind the tweeter covers is a foam insert that covers the bolts for the wing mirror, I squeezed my Focal tweeters in there so I could sit the OEM covers over the top. Miles better sound quality and still looks standard.

Are they visable at all or have you managed to get them in behind the standard cover?

They're behind the standard cover :)
