track day overtaking rules

Featured Replies

just watchin " a racing car is born" on quest and its about track days. it was just saying that the rule is only overtaking on the left and on the straights. why left? you would think in this country its more natural to overtake on the right?

In my experience it depends whether the pits are on the infield or not.

As I understand it:

Pit lane joins from L/H side. Overtaking on the left.

Pit lane joins from R/H side overtaking on the right.

Could be a bunch of Arse though.

I think I've seen that rule/ thought mentioned somewhere else.

Yup, as I understand it

Most circuits go in a clockwise direction so the car being overtaken would be in a more comfortable inside of the track position and the over taker on the outside.

I could also be talking Arse too!

Pretty sure it's this ^^^^

Castle Combe runs clockwise but overtaking is on the right as the pit exit is on the left of the track.

Imagine the carnage if you were trying to head for the pits but everytime you got near the exit someone swooped around you between you blokcing your exit.

You could be stuck out there all day, unable to escape!! :D

Oulton park had an infield pit, clockwise direction, but overtaking on the left. You will always be told the overtaking procedure at any briefing though. :)

 Overtaking on the left.

Same rules as being on a Motorway then

As it should be.

Pit exit on the right of the track - overtaking on the left.

Pit exit on the left of the track - overtaking on the right.

It's always the other side than the pit exit.

This to stop you blasting past a slower car at warp speed only to meet a noob coming out of the pits.

Same rules as being on a Motorway then

I'm not following you home from the August meet then (that's home to my house not yours) :hi:

I'll follow you then, your house not mine

Same rules as being on a Motorway then

Only if you're in a White Van . However, when the motorway is busy, and full of MLM, an attempted undertake ( in a van ) almost always makes 4X4 MLM man speed up out of the way .

I'll follow you then, your house not mine

Not an issue, I think we must go past Brimma's on the way to get to mine?

Is it me, or do these two contradict each other?

From my experience of Bedford, I'd go with the latter

If it's black n gold, move the **** over. HTH

Pit lane was, and probably still is, on the left at Combe. I indicated left the whole way round. (clockwise direction)

I'm sure I've got some footage of 'The Fox' overtaking me at Bedford........will try to dig it out

I've got footage of The Fox lapping me at least twice at Combe.............I'll leave it where it is :D

I'm not proud   ;)

I think the only person who didn't pass me was a chap in a Fabia SDi........and he was being sympathetic  :(

But I bet you had a big smile though. It's all about having fun :)

Oh and the way I perceive it, you overtake on the opposite side to the pit exit/ entrance.

Eg castle Combe, pit lane on the left overtake on the right.

Brands hatch pit lane on the right overtake on the left

I had a stonking time at Combe, Charlie. The old fella wasn't too chuffed though :D

Sorry folks, but I think you are wrong.

It depends only on which side of the track you exit to go into the pits and come back out.

This is to stop the faster moving cars smashing into the back of slower cars trying to get in or out of the pits, while they are trying to overtake someone on track.

Silverstone is clockwise and overtaking is on the outside (left) because the pits are inside the circuit and the exit/entrance to the pits is on the right.

Same with Brands Hatch.

Castle Combe is also clockwise, but as the pits are not inside the circuit the exit is on the left.

So you overtake on the right (inside).

Charlie is right.

At Knockhill you had to overtake on the left, it's a clockwise circuit and the pits are on the left.  Their system seemed a bit daft though as you were only allowed to overtake cars on the straights and when the slower driver had moved off the racing line to the right hand side which they rarely actually did so most laps were spent crawling behind people who were going so slow you didn't even need to brake for the corners.
