Featured Replies

I do about 30k a year getting to a from work including business miles. Looking at the car situation. I opt out of the car scheme and therefore get paid an ammount of cash to get a car. The wife has just knicked the Furby and left me with the mondeo..... boooo. It is a good car but no fun. Whilst looking at the cost / fun factors would you buy a

Ooops - forgot to post details! If buying from Japan, make sure you get someone to pick it who knows about the make of car you're after so they can pick a good one. Most Japanese cars will be low mileage for the age and will more than likely come well kitted out with climate, folding wings mirrors, etc.

Things to be aware of are that Japanese performance cars are designed to run on 100 RON fuel so make sure the person who brings it in gets it remapped for you, or make sure you run it on Optimax+octane booster. Car will need converting from km/h to mph and may also be limited to 112mph ... up to you if you have that removed ;) I believe the radio also needs to be adjusted or replaced to pick up UK frequencies.

I'm also not sure if the cars in Japan have underseal on them. May be worth checking, especially in our winter climate!

Hope that gives you a start :D

SOunds good to me.

Nissan 200SX

I had a jap import honda CBR400 years.

Only problems I had was getting it fixed when it started having electrical problems.

A good friend of mine has just imported an RX-7 through an import website... Absolute bargain!! Given that we reckon it's got about

Trouble with imports is that you don't know the history,so if it's been thrashed to death, it's your problem. I know someone who bought an imported Mitsubishi FTO, and it cost her 3K for a new engine after 6 months......

Admittedly though, same goes over here if you're out of warranty on a car - anything can go wrong at anytime. You pays your money, you takes your chances... Best to take it to a specialist to get it checked over - the money you save from importing it would easily cover this.

What do you think about the reliability of a 195 car when I want to do 30k motorway miles?

In general, Jap cars tend to be bulletproof. Assuming that the import company you buy from give the car a good going over, and you're confident they've adapted it for UK fuel, etc, and you get it serviced properly, you will be able to do 30k in it with no problems :D

Chris

Remember when buying a jap import (sorry if anyone covered it)

1. Dash will be in KMH

2. May well be speed limited

3. Could well have incorrect tyres for UK (wrong speed rating, see above)

4. No fog light
