Future Car Thoughts

Featured Replies

Been a bit quite here lately with lots going on.This is more for me to think out loud about potential cars I could get if I decide to replace the Fabia vRS. I've been given a house to live in until the end of the month nearby but I would like to buy somewhere eventually. Once the month is up I'm considering renting somewhere nearby that's cheap just so I get some independance, be closer to work and maybe even cycle in. But it's made me toy with the thought I could get one last toy before I settle and save to buy a house. Renting will only b a bit more than my current fuel costs and that's without me having to service it twice as often, stick more tyres on it and still top up with oil. Not much but still a chore.

So I have two options. Still live at home and buy a derv. I've driven two Octavia vRS Estate's and were night and day which means it could take me a while to find a tidy one, then I'd have to map an lower it so more expense. But for less money I could get something still petrol and maybe more powerful if I moved plus I can cycle to work too. This option appeals quite a bit and providing I sell private or trade in to a non-Skoda dealer I should get decent money for mine. Means with some cash I have a budget of £10k for something fun. Tempted to try RWD too, 4wd could also be an option.

Any ideas? And no I'm not buying a motorbike. I want a fun car.

you won't get much for ten quid!

That's what I get for posting on my phone. Although my Dad bought an allegro for £50 and run it for a few years

My dad bought a Valxhall for 50P whilst we were fighting against Carcraft. Walked round the back and tripped over the tow ball, which was nice.

I am in the same boat Martyn, I'm looking to change too.

About 10-11k to spend.

Just don't know whether to go older and posher or newer

and crapper. It's finding a balance. Simply put I need a new van and need

to release some of the money that's parked on the drive doing

nothing (800 odd miles in the last 12 months).

If I spend wisely and get what I'm after for the Audi,

Then I can get a newer (than 09)  car and a much newer (than 03) van

and still have a little change. Today looked at a 56 plate 3.0 Z4 coupe,

I do fancy it but have also been looking at older Porsche 911s too.

I do well under 2k a year in the car so MPG and insurance not an issue.

It's just a potential money pit if things go wrong... But I've always wanted

a 911 (ever since I was about 6 or 7 years old) any 911 really. They all

look alike :p

Don't really want a convertible though, and fast isn't as important as it

once was.

As a parent I suggest you leave home!

And this is my thought too. Older and posher is winning slightly but all that is negated if it's hiding a massive bill. If I move nearer to work I'm within less than 5 miles which is easy cycling distance. Car would be used for fun and going home on weekends. I considered an Elise but are now out of budget.

If you're thinking of buying a house just save your money would be my advice. Houses are feckin expensive to run.

If you must buy something then go cheap and get a 90s classic. Saab 9-5 2.3T Aero?

Realistically it would take me over a year to save now for the deposit for a house. Man maths says my car part-ex and around £3k on top would be good for one last fun car. The house plan, since I can live at home/rent close anyway I was thinking of something that needed gutting and modernising, There's a few around work too but most don't have the patience plus location is only good for around here. It's an awkward commute if say you worked in Swansea or Cardiff. Need to think more on that.

One thing I do know is despite it being good on fuel I don't want a Rapid.
