fitting new wishbone bush

Featured Replies

I was just wondering how hard of a job it is to fit a standard Octavia front wishbone rear bush. Can it be pressed in with a home made tool? I've just had the car up on the jack today and noticed the drivers side bush split. The other side failed last year for the mot so it makes sense the other side has gone.

you need a press,I wouldn't improvise anything. The force of depressing the bush is considerale.I did replace them on a 6T press and still some force was needed.

Yeah I suspected as much. It was bowders rear beam bush fitting guide made me think about making a tool. I hate paying labour costs!!

Take the wishbones out by yourself and take them to a garage to depress and repress the new bushes, how much can it costs?

This is why many people fit poly bushes. It's easy with threaded rod, a couple of nuts, and a couple of large washers, has less slop and lasts longer than standard bushes.

Win - win.

I have thought about this. Is it easy to get the old ones out?

VRade has a small how to on his project thread about removing the bushes from the wishbones.

Got mine out with a drill and a hammer took about 5mins. Then poly bushes even quicker to go back in.

Here is a good DYI so you have an idea of the job. Its look like is a PITA!

You can get on e-bay a bushing instalation tool for this job:

I dont know how much a mechanic or the Skoda dealer will charge you for this job, but here in my country I pay US$ 140.00 hand labor for replacing both rear bushings.

I order Meyle rear bushings on e-bay

Good luck

Well I still used a hydraulic press, cause it was there...

But you could demolish them from the inside and work outwards...

Nah... it can by done without a press on the front wishbone rear bush as I have done it few times

You could do it yourself but you need to be prepared for a bit of a job. The std bushes are in tight but you can drill the rubber section and then either use a saw to cut through the plastic outer ring or bang a small flat screwdriver down between wishbone and plastic sleeve. The plastic sleeve will then just collapse. You might be lucky and the whole bush just comes out together as the drill holes weaken it. I have done the job a few times and do not find it that bad now. Getting in a solid bush(from Audi TT or Seat LCR or R32)  is even more of a PITA and these have no give in them at all. For the solid bushes install , you either need a press or a good vice and a set of over sized sockets and under sized socket to act as a ram to press the bush into the wishbone.

A lot easier if you replace with poly bushes that can be pushed in.

Eek! Meyle bushes are absolute crap.

Polybushing a beam is even easier, as the superpro are two piece, and just slot in either side.

Why you say Meyle bushes are crap? Do you have experience with them. They dont last? I really apreciated your coments

They are just inferior quality to oem bushes and lemforder bushes which are oem quality. With bushes you are best to get good quality else they won't last long.

Cheers for the info. I've just watched a bloke on YouTube fitting a new standard rubber bush using a long bar and two hole cutters. 64mm and 57mm. It didn't look too bad to be honest. He took it out the same way. Does anyone have one to hand to confirm the outer piece is 57mm? Does fitting an Audi TT bush make a difference?

Does fitting an Audi TT bush make a difference?

Yes a lot of difference as it is a solid bush compared to the VRS which is a voided bush. It is a very good upgrade from std

A lot harder to press in though

I used to use them on various vehicles, but when they'd come back a year later and all the drop joints are knackered again, and then the following year and the bushes are completely totalled, it became obvious that they are nowhere near the OEM supplier quality.

Tbh I don't know what meyle or lemforder is. I would just order OEM or poly ones when I come to do it. I'm edging towards Audi TT ones though.

I was not aware of MEYLE quality issues :wall:   Mechanic already intalled them (the rear bean ones and also the front arm ones. I Just spend US$ 240.oo on hand labor for fitting them.

Let see how long they last

Thx,

You can use a bench vice and a few spacers to push new bushes in, I've done it that way a few times now, seems to work ok.

Oops. Also, just to annoy you further, the replacement wishbones that come complete with bushes, aren't very expensive, and for what it would have cost you in labour charges to have somebody press the four bushes in and out, you could most likely have paid for the difference between the cost of cheap bushes, and the cost of new wishbones.
