powerflex red dogbone Bush on a vrs?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I know the dogbone Bush is a well and truely exhausted conversation but just a quick question.

I've read about people using the red tdi rear dogbone Bush to get stiffness without the increased vibrations, has anyone had any experience of this on a vrs?

I have read the great write up on here of the findings on the differences between powerflex yellow and super pro and I was sold on the super pro but the pf red Bush is only £25 instead of super pro @ £45. I'm going to do the frontwith super pro regardless And I'm not trying to be right by not getting both in sp but I don't like throwing money away If there is an alternate as good product cheaper (it'll go towards the decat!).

Thanks in advance for any input.

I have a Powerflex yellow one with no issues.

I have the red one and I'm delighted

Slight change of thought process... I've just had quick look under the car and it had a standard rear and yellow front which explains the loud cabin vibrations at low revs. I have just bought the vrs off my sister who has done 23k on it and the Bush has been on there from the previous owner. I'm guessing it may have been over tightened as the vibration has been there since they bought it but never bothered them to do anything about it and became a bit of a running joke, you can feel it through the pedals too as when they bought this car 4 years ago I still had my old one @140k miles which felt much smoother compared to this which at the time had done 38k (now 61k).

I recon I'll whip it off and check it out and torque it back up correctly.

Do you need to replace the bolts each time removed?

The four mounting bolts are stretch bolts. As usual, there will be people who say that they have reused them with no issues, but I'm not risking it for the sake of £4.67 for the four bolts.

I currently have a Superpro (apparently, not actually checked!) and I find it too soft, so will be going to Vibra-Technics at some point. Another member has a single piece of the two-piece yellow Powerflex dog bone bush for sale if you wanted to try mixing and matching to tune the bush to your needs. I was going to do this but have decided to pay a visit to Corby instead.

I would post a pic buddy as I don't think powerflex (yellow) do a front bush. They only do a rear bush i think, It is only super pro that do both front and rear.

Are you being mistaken it that the rear bush is in two sections. And perhaps the owner only fitted one part, which kinda could be why you have even worse vibrations as a stronger bush is battling with std half section of std rear bush and winning.

best bet is post a pic.

I did that reference guide some time back comparing various variants of bushes.

I did not cover the powerflex "red" rear bush but believe it to sit slighter softer than the powerflex yellow rear bush. So is a good upgrade for folks not wanting a "as" harsh as the yellow, but a dam site better than std..

I have the red one on mine, such a good mod, i did have some vibrations but they died down as it got more worn in, crisp gear change and no wheel hop now :)

Thanks for all the replys guys!

My mistake on front to back... Doh. It is deffo the 2 piece yellow Bush with horizontal bolt through it with a standard Bush with vertical bolt through it and is very harsh so I'll re torque what's there and see if it makes a difference and pick up some fresh bolts from tps. If it's harsh still I'll give the red a go but it's possible the yellow in there has eased off but to tight and may have shaken the standard other Bush to bits. I'll investigate further in the next few days and report back.

Ah so you have yellow bush at rear(the 2 piece) and  a std bush at front. I would be surprised if the std bush has gone as this is rare.

i would maybe think the yellow rear ones have been tightened up either too much as that could make a lot of issues or actually come loose .

Also i would steer clear of changing front it it is not split as to fit a poly bush up front as well will make your vibration worse.

i think you will end up getting red rear bush and a torque check will solve your woes

Finally got round to fitting the red powerflex dogbone bush today, bought it months ago but we have a baby due today in fact so been mega busy sorting out the house, garden and pretty much anything else my wife has been nesting about!

Deffo had a polyflex yellow bush, I actually found an old document in the service history with the private reg of the owner previous to my sister having the car m666mne, so I searched on here as I know he was a member and fortunately the reg was/is his user name and could see from his previous posts what had been done to the car (and removed before my sister bought it!). The yellow bush was fitted by awesome so I can only assume that it had been torqued correctly with new bolts...

So the findings...

Well as I said, it had a yellow bush, unsure if at correct torque but the center bolt was incredibly tight to undo. Whilst driving there was a lot of cabin vibration and harsh clutch pedal feel, the same feeling through the accelerator pedal.

New red bush on with new bolts torqued 16mm bolts to 40nm + quarter turn, 13mm bolts to 20nm + quarter turn and center bolt 55nm.

If I'm honest I was a little nervous to turn the key as I hoped desperately it wasn't going to be as harsh (it really rumbled loud on start up with the yellow bush). So, turned the key and...... Nice smooth silence... Oh my god I was so happy! I drove the car up the road 100 yards and back laughing to my self as it was as clear as night and day the difference in just that short distance. Really looking forward to the 20 mile run up to work in the morning in it now.

Cheers for all the advice guys!

55nm seems a lot for the centre bolt. But glad you got it sorted..

So can upgrading the dogbone bush improve a notchy gear change as well as reducing wheel hop? And if I did change them does anyone know the correct torque settings.

Yes it can. As if you have a tight dogbone bush there is less movement in the gear change from the engine not rocking back and fourth so much. But I would still do gear linkage adjustment.

I've done the adjustment a few times now. I've put some redline gear oil in too and it has improved it a little bit. Next thing is a clutch bleed and Imight just try a new dogbone bush as iit'll still be on the original.

Hi Bowders, I got the torque settings off the tt forum. I Googled for them and those setting seemed to be the most consistent in suggestion, the 55nm was quoted as suggested by Audi, but it's all just what people have written on forums so I appreciate it's a gamble on my part!

I did 40 miles in it yesterday and it felt great, transformed the car for me, but with the amount of vibration I had I have a feeling it had been over tightened on the yellow Bush.

The red had a cut out ridge around the larger side of the Bush to allow a little more flex but shifting gear and hard acceleration felt very positive. In all I'm very happy, so again thanks for the advice a couple of months back.
