Cambelt Kit - Gates any good

Featured Replies

Wife's vRS (06 plate) needs a cambelt change (and water pump).

Local indy who we use has suggested he fits a Gates kit.

He says that Gates guarantee to put right any damage caused by a failed kit for the life of the cambelt i.e. in this case 4 years.

Are they any good?

Gates are OEM to most manufacturers. Plus their the best imo

I would suggest that the main thing is whether the water pump has a steel or plastic impeller; to paraphrase 'Animal farm', steel Good, plastic Bad....

Plastic is what VAG use.

Old plastic original ones (brittle - bad)

New plastic ones (different formula - good and recommended)

Also gates are about the best as said

Plastic break, engine get hot.

Steel break, engine go bye bye.

If you change the pump regularly you shouldn't have problems. Also VAG apparently changed the construction to stop the plastic impellors breaking up.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Cam belt and pump were done 4 years ago.

Think I'll go for the Gates kit.

Cheers

The diesel hasn't had the same issues some other engines have with water pumps so no issues with a normal plastic one

As stated Gates are OE quality and plastic impellas are fine on the water pumps and a safer option if it was ever to fail

I put a gates water pump kit on mine last year. Think it was £109 and as said probably the best brand you can use. Never heard of any gates stuff being faulty either

Where's the cheapest place for the gates kit?

CES or Ebay

Watch out with eBay, a lot of dodgy brakes/discs/ cambelt kits. I'd shop elsewhere tbh

I meant reputable companies. Not any old Tom, **** and Harry

I did consider doing this myself but the local indy we use will do it for £240 with the Gates kit.

Not worth the trouble of doing the job yourself.
