Going from Octavia to Superb

Featured Replies

After a fair bit of looking round I think I'm going to chop the Octy in for a nearly new Superb. Before I do, just got a couple of questions....

My mk2 Octy is SE spec with rear parking sensors added when I bought it, what (if anything) does the Superb SE spec have as standard over the Octy equivalent?

Is the greenline any good? 1.6 tdi in a car the size of a Superb sounds underpowered.

Cheers.

What type of driving do you normally do - this will be a big factor?  City driving/low mileage might be ok but otherwise the greenline is underpowered IMO although not as much as you might expect given the size of the car.  Coming from a 1.9tdi Octavia a few years ago I felt after testing the greenline that it was lacking and you will get caught out a bit on overtaking manoeuvres.  It is CR now and is very quiet however. Having said that fuel economy is excellent and very popular with taxi drivers so that says a lot too.  Lots on this forum will claim around 60mpg with that engine.  The 140 might not be a bad option either.

The alloys will be an inch bigger and seats should be part leather anyway and they are probably two main differences.  I'll let the specific SE comparisons to the others as the Irish spec (it is called 'ambition' here) probably differs a bit.  Rear sensors should be included.  You will be surprised what is standard on the SE spec though.

Good luck with the switch up and nice choice!

I test drove a 1.6tdi and eventually bought the 140 2.0. The 1600 was OK faired well cruising on the motorway but really lacked the oomph to overtake comfortably especially on an incline. While it was OK I think long term the lower power would bug me. The flip side is you get almost unbelievable MPG for what is a big heavy car. Suppose it depends on your priorities.

I recently bought a Greenline 3 and my only anxiety was over the suitability of the 1600 power plant.

As soon as I took delivery my concerns disappeared. It is a surprisingly lively unit with outrageously good mpg. I do not find it at all underpowered. (My previous car was Mk2 FL Octavia VRS).

Each to their own, but I think the Superb Greenline is fabulous. Good luck.

I have just part exchanged from 2012 Octavia Estate SE Plus 2.0TDI CR 140 manual (11,000mls)to 2013 Superb Estate SE 2.0TDI CR 140 DSG (3,800mls)and love it.

It only has Bolero radio instead of Amundsen+ so I don't have Sat Nav or Bluetooth any more but I rarely used the Sat Nav as I think my TomTom Go550 is far better.

Got fed up with "stay on this road for a long time" and "turn left at second" instead of "turn left at end of road"

I bought a JABRA BT speakerphone and can connect two phones instead of one.

Overall mpg with Octavia was 49.4mpg and so far 53mpg with Superb DSG, although this has been on mainly longer journeys so far.

The gain was:

Cruise control

17” ‘Trifid’ alloys

‘Alcantara’ upholstery

Aluminium floor plates in boot with sliding partition tether system

Boarding spots (under door mirrors)

Electrically folding door mirrors

Dual-zone air conditioning with ventilation outlets in B pillar

Front fog lights with cornering function

Light Assistant (coming home and tunnel light)

Height adjustable front armrest with 3.5mm aux. socket

Interior door handle illumination

Footwell lights

12V Socket for rear seats (total of 3)

Gas strut for engine cover

I also got the garage to fit protective side strips and a full size spare wheel in the price.

I like Kev have also gone from an Octavia FL VRS to an SE Greenline 3 Combi. I do a mixture of fast A roads, if the traffic allows!!! Town driving and motorways. Once you get used to the gearing, making progress and keeping up with the traffic is easy considering it's only a 1.6. I regularly get 60+ mpg on the road into and out of work. To be honest I don't miss my VRS, if I really need speed I can take my wife's VRS for a blast, in 6 months I haven't bothered. It's a nice relaxed cruiser, which is want I wanted.

Just clicked through 10000 miles since August and know I made a good choice. I did find the front seats a bit flat to start with, but once they have worn into my shape, really comfortable. In terms of kit it has everything I want.

The stop start can be annoying when I drive around for work in South London, as the roads are more stop than start, mind you I just switch it off.

Only other minor gripes are a slightly rattly vent, hopefully now sorted and a radio with a mind of it's own, dealer is trying to sort. The rear door rattled at first, fixed under warranty.

Thanks for the replies so far - very helpful (as ever on this forum!)

My drive is a 30 mile round trip on straight A-roads during the week for work, plus the odd weekend going to the Midlands and Surrey.

I'm after more of a relaxed cruiser as I'm definitely getting lazier as I get older - I know the greenline only comes with a manual box (incidentally 5 speed or 6 speed?  I've seen that the new Octavia greenline has 6 where it used to have 5, wasn't sure if this is the same in the Superb) but it's the only Superb I'd consider for manual, if I don't go greenline I'll be looking for a DSG.

Nice to hear that even going for the same SE spec as I currently have means I'd get more as standard, this opens up more possibilities rather than just looking at Elegance's.

Steve.

The FL 1.6 greenlines have the 6 speed manual box AFAIK

I went from a 2.7 Porsche Boxster to my Greenline II Estate and I really don't miss the power at all. (and yes i'm amazed too)

It's suprisingly nippy if in the power but doesn't want to know if the turbo isn't spinning. After a few days I got used to this and

make sure if I want acceleration that i'm in the power band.

I really enjoy the relaxed lazy nature of the car and the MPG is much better than the porker.

Mine is a 5 speed but the new ones are 6.

Correct. Six speed in the Greenline 3 and it is as smooth as a baby's bottom.

I previously owned an Octavia vRS diesel and now have a Superb estate greenline in S spec. I changed due to an expanding family and needed the extra space. My drive to work into London is mostly motorway and a small bit of urban driving and I'm getting 60 - 62mpg on that run. I also feel quite smug when sitting in traffic without the engine running.

Don't get me wrong, the vRS is a fantastic car, but in day to day driving how much do you use the power? But I wont miss the fact it chewed through expensive 18" tyres within 18000 miles, the high tax and the fact I got burgled by someone trying to steal it!

I love my Superb and can see why it has won so many awards. I love the space inside and the boot capacity, the cheap tax and the great fuel economy. I know i have the basic model but I don't realy miss any of the gadgets I had other than the parking sensors, and I don't even miss having the 6th gear once i had got used to the gearing of the greenline. I have fitted a spare wheel and had the windows tinted from the B pilar back localy for £140 and i intend to retro fit some parking sensors due to the cars vast length, but other than that I hope to keep this car for many years to come and hope it stands up to everything my kids will throw at it!

I have 1.6 cr Octavia ,and just traded the wifes trustey old 1.9pd Octavia  for 2.0 cr 170 superb , the 1.6 is a poor performing engine compared to the 1.9 pd  , it has no power until high up the rev range and fuel consumption is no where near as claimed .the 2.0cr is the only sensible chose for the superb or Octavia , I consider the 1.6 a backward step in the both these models .

Im afraid I disagree. I have a greenline Se and think the engines is great. It certainly doesn't under perform in my eyes and I came from a octy vrs. In the sumner I was easily seeing mpgin the high 70's. I normally change gear buy approx 2500 rpm and not found it slow. By all means it's not Vrs quick in the same way the Vrs is not Porsche quick. All the power from the Vrs is wasted as it was never driven flat out as our roads and road laws do not permit this. Its a1.6 which copes well with the cars size, is comfy, economical and only costs £30 a year to tax. I have no regrets going from my octy vrs to the greenline. As mine is a pre fl I only wish it had the 6 speed box.

Well I went from a 1.8TSi Octavia to a Twin door Superb Greenline SE around 18 months ago and it has not caused me any issues.

The 1.6 is ok but you wont win any races. You do need to take your time and plan when overtaking on country lanes but on the motorways its fine.

I would like more power but its a company car so my options were limited.

Overall it is a very comfy motor and you can do plenty of miles without stopping for breaks. Mine is just 18 months old (1st Sept 2012) and has just clicked over the 70,000 mark.

I get around 56-60 mpg on average a bit more on a steady run.

My Greenline 1.6 gives me 70mpg on motorway journeys at 70mph, in serene comfort.

Delighted with my sensible choice.

Did not want and do not need a more powerful version.

Well just traded my 03 Octavia Ambiente in for a 62 plate Superb Greenline SE - should get it on Friday. Looking forward to the weekend!

yes on the motorway the 1.6 cr is fine , if you have a general mix of driving it is not , can anyone truly say they don't feel stress pulling away round town on roundabouts at busy junctions , there are two many boy racer focus rs types willing to cut you off ,the 1.6crjust doesn't have the power at low revs to give the confidence in town traffic . but if all you are after is low road then it is the engine of choice .

That should say low road tax.?

I find my greenline a very relaxing car to drive. I drive mine round town, around fast paced round abouts and busy junctions. I CAN truly say I don't feel stressed. The only thing about my car that stresses me out is the continual rattle from the passenger side dash. My commute is 33 miles each way of a mix motorway, a road, b roads city streets and 20mph villages. Not once have I felt ive needed more power. Yes you need to think about when to overtake but surely that's no bad thing.

I have no problems a junctions or roundabouts whatsoever but I do drive my Greenline very hard and I am happy to take towards the red line in the lower gears,

The only time I wish I had more power is on windy country roads around the 50/60 mph mark where you need plenty of room to overtake.
