still using 2.5 litres of oil between 10K services

Featured Replies

I have noticed that if I go on a long run my 1.9tdi uses or burns more oil, has anyone got to the bottom of the problem yet, I top up with Asda fully sync, 5 .30, £10 for a 2 ltr bottle,  its now on 74K, would using 5.40 help.

I have tried to find out the solution, I had the turbo changed thinking this may help, so the next is valve stem oil seals, they will be done along with the belt change, when ever that's due.

Is there anything else to check

I have just had my second extended servive on my car and I still have the original one litre can of oil that I had when I bought the car. Most of my miles are motorway between Spain, Portugal, Holland and the UK.

I once had an XR3I that burned a pint of oil between Aberdeen and Stirling. It was the valve stem oil seals!

Have you tried using the approved VW507.00 oil?

My 2.0 170CR uses up to ½ ltr between long life services (up to 20K miles)

My CFGB uses about half a litre between variable services, usually 18k or thereabouts. Oil consumption has been consistent through the whole life of the car, now 107,000 miles.

I always use Castrol Edge 507.00. No point in scrimping on lube is there.

I also use Castrol Edge and did not need to top up before my first service at 18.5k miles. Did not see any difference on the dip stick either and have not since that time in the last 7k miles.

I always thought the 1.9PDs as being quite thirsty for oil, so doesn't surprise me.

Any 1.9 pd I know only uses around half litre coming up to an oil change (10k)

are you sure the oil quality is OK , if the engine seems OK .

My 2009 1.9 pd is at 60,000 miles. It uses a little under 1 litre every 9,000 miles (i.e. an oil change).

That is on Castrol Edge 5w/30. It's consumption has been fairly steady over the last 40,000 miles.

That's with plenty of motorway/A-road use, only a little town driving.

I would expect a change to 5w/40 to slow your usage a bit. (As long as it's VW 505.01 or above, of course - for fixed service intervals). A mate with a Passat reckoned his 1.9 felt a little bit smoother on 5w/40, but the fuel consumption was slightly worse. He racked up over 300,000 miles on 1,9 pd s, so he'd had some experience.
