Feck Rust

Featured Replies

Gave the car a really good wash today. Whilst drying I found the bottom of the drivers door and wing are rusting. Its only a 6 yr old car

On the pre facelift cars the stone chip paint isn't high enough and you get bubbling and rust just above it.

I try to stay on top of it with the zinc undercoat but it's dissapointing. Mudflaps wouldn't make much of a difference but if I'd know I could have got some film on it.

Too late now.

I've been quoted £480 inc vat to strip back and respray both sills and rear spoiler. Sounds a lot but I guess there's quite a lot of prep involved.

Just been down. The wing isn't fitted right. So the door catches on it when it opens and closes which has chipped away the paint causing the rust

Corrosion is form the inside out

Rust is from outside in.

Not many people get a claim on the corrosion warranty but worth a try.

What would you expect to be a fair quote to remove rust. And respray door and wing?

top motorbike tip

buy some acf-50 its an anti corrison spray that is used on air craft and well motorbikes to stop rust.

it actually eats away at the rust and provides a film to protect it in the future.

hydrocarbons wash it off, so thats soap etc, just re apply in the areas that need it done till next wash.

water is fine it can get as wet as you want it to.

a tin of acf-50 is £16

does my 3 bikes a year and touches on stone chips that I dont want to worsen.

Thanks for that info. But the wing still needs realigning and painting. Spoke to Skoda UK again. This time they couldn't understand why they didn't take photos and put in as a claim. So they have made me a case file and should here back within 24 hours

Thanks for the heads up on this, i didnt think my 54 plate would be covered. I have some bubbling through under the door. I am taking the car over to the dealer later, they have said if its underneath the paint is should be covered, if the paint is broken as in a stonechip it wont. Mine is definately under the paint....

Doesn't look like I will get it under warranty as the door and wing have been painted before both readings are above 200microns of paint

Looks like the repair was not checked for clearance before final painting, as the panels have rubbed.

Get the panels aligned first and then simply flat it down and brush in the damage with primer and colour, then get the edges polished in?

Sounds appropriate for a 2008 car and you'd have to look for the repair if it was done properly.

Be careful that if repaired before they may have blended a slightly off colour paint mix along the car and if you wade in with the original colour sprayed on a localised repair it may show.

How many panels were painted?  Just the door and wing?  If so buy those panels in original paint finish off a breaker and get them fitted, then resell your parts?

Body shop Skoda sent me too said something. Not aligned properly. Front wing and both o/s doors painted. He checked the seams which matched up with the other side. So in his opinion had been caught on something. Also you say the samething move the wing forward and touch it in. How much do you reckon cost wise for that?

  • 1 month later...

I've got rust on the underside of my drivers sill just above the stone chip paint, a small ding on the opposite side with a few small bubbles of rust starting and my boot has 3 very small bubbles and a spoiler that needs attention!

I've been quoted £300 cash by 2 garages to do both sills plus new stone chip and the whole boot and spoiler. That sounds ok don't you think?

There is 12 years anti perforation warranty on these. Pop to your local Skoda dealer and get them to submit a technical review of the paint. Might save you a few pennies if accepted

Advice much appreciated!

I have a very small spot of rust starting on the edge of the tailgate at the end of the seam on the bootlid which I know has known issues. I took it to my local dealer who without even looking initially said that it must be catching the bumper. I then took them out and pointed out is was no where near the bumper or any other part of the bodywork. They still weren't interested and said they would order me a touch up brush. That was 2 weeks ago and they haven't even phoned to say they've got that in. Clearly not interested. Thing that really gets me is the dealer knows how well I keep my car and often comments how immaculate it is. Car is 2010 model. Is it best just contacting suk about it or trying another dealer?

Contact SUK it's not upto the dealer to dismiss it. Or ask if SUK have any other approved body shops near you

The sill below the driver door on mine is down to bare metal in quite a few places, right above the proper stone chip protection. Why the **** they didn't take the protection up another couple of inches to at least that crease line that runs the length of the car is beyond me. Seen posts of DIY attempts having to be redone after just a few months and proper bodyshop efforts after a couple of years. Sorely tempted to just mask off on that crease line and get some Blue 'hammer finish' Hammerite and put a couple of coats on.  :giggle:

Worst thing is I know I'm stupid enough to do it and having time on my hands (taken a week off work) is a dangerous thing
