Check yer nuts.

Featured Replies

Passing on the learning experience....

Leaving the house this morning I glanced at the Octy which went back onto her summer tyres on Sunday. I noticed that one of the nut covers was standing a bit proud and then realised that the entire nut was very loose.

I am usually quite good at stuff like this but I have got home so late the last three nights that I had not had the chance to check the wheels after a short distance. And over the 150 or so miles that the car has now done since the change, that nut had got very loose.

And if you're male...check your other nuts too ;)

I had my tyres changed at a garage one, got home and decided to do something which involved removing the wheels, low and be hold 2 of them were only done up finger tight!

Strange I swaped the wheels around yesterday front to back and several of the nuts where not a tight as I would have liked, so I have torqued them up to what they should be 120nm

I lost a locking wheel nut like this.

But given that all the others were in there pretty FT I can only assume I plain forgot to tighten it at all.

You're better off losing all three locking nuts like this than having them done up to tight by a numpty with an air gun

Yeah I agree, I never torque up locking wheel nuts, I just nip them up, I've been stuck at the side of the road before because of those infernal things being too tight.

All the bolts had been tightened by this numpty (AKA me) with a torque wrench.  :D

I was mostly referring to the non-lockers in the same wheel, I do tend to be quite careful. FT - was used mostly for dramatic effect.

Just so happens I missed one off entirely so am guessing it had only been sat in there flush after a few turns by hand, waiting for me to take the wrench to it.

Re torque after 50 miles, this will cure the problem of them coming lose.

Left a garage once in my Mk4 Escort Harrier  and on one wheel they had only turned the nuts a few turns by hand, I saw wheel move in and out in mirror! Also on the wheel nuts bit, a car on a bend flew across my path years ago when I was cycling and proper crashed. I was initially fuming as it just missed me but saw one of front wheels going off into another field, Kwik Fit 20 min before  :giggle:

Torque wrench is worth it's weight in ....... cheap pressed steel so is a must for anyone who ever changes their own! I wouldn't take a car back off a garage unless I saw them torquing my nuts or I did them myself after, then recheck 20-50 miles later.

Yes check yer nuts
