tt strut brace fitting

Featured Replies

Ok I purchased a tt strut brace and wanting to fit it now but have a few questions as always!!

The 2 brackets that people cut off, do I need to cut them off? I ask this as when I sat it on the turrets they didn't seem to interfer with anything. So i take it people cut these off just because they don't want them there?

Secondly when I did sit it on the turrents it sat slightly left. This was mainly because on the inner side of the left turret as you look at the engine bay there are 2, I'm guessing electrical wire, tubing going into the bulk head. Obviously I'll just push the bar over to the right slightly to get it centre but have people had this small issue?

Thirdly, when I do push it to the right to centre it on the turrets, the inner side on both sides does not come into contact with the turret? Now I know when I bolt it down it will obviously press onto the turrets but wanted to make sure this is expected before I start drilling and that the brackets of the bar aren't bent slightly? ?

Appreciate the feedback guys

Thanks

Frenchie

Here's mine fitted brackets still on as they don't catch some people cut them off as it looks smoother. qunama5e.jpg

Mine was fitted with brackets intact with no issues. I just centered it on the turrets and drilled like that.

nice....what bolts are you using for this?Found at local scrap yard this TT strut bar at less than 20 pounds.

Even with my stock suspension I think it will be a good upgrade, this chasis is not the best, not even close :)

That looked more like a s3 brace to me :)

Thinner 1 side as it curves round top,

How weird :)

Here mine,

TT Brace, smoothed n coated

Iirc i used m8x35mm stainless bolts, spring washer / washer / loc nut

Does look slightly different when I look at the 2 pics side by side.

When you drilled the holes did you spray paint or grease on the exposed metal to prevent corrosion?

I will be fitting one to my Golf and have bought some galvanised paint to spray through the holes once drilled, just a thought..

Definitely. I had a can of magic black from Halfords and sprayed the bare metal holes before the strut was fitted.

Yeah i put paint in the holes :)

S3 braces tend to have the thinner part where it goes round the passengers strut :)

All look good tho

Good call on spraying the holes before fitting!

Mine is still hanging up in the garage from before Christmas when I got it off krissthemiller, until I get the turbo in I thought it pointless to add any further engine bay obstructions. I also got the lower brace off him but I am dubious this would make any real improvement as it is just a flat bar that fits to the subframe with riv nuts  :wonder:

if you use just paint is useless

Botton brace helps keep the whole front square, made a difference on my old Octy MK1 vRS. Without it the top is nice and solid, but the bottom by comparison can twist and feel odd on the track/fast road.

I have it so I will fit it and see how it goes, looks a very unlikely piece of kit though, a flat bar with some foam on it  :wonder:

I only painted mine and it's now been on over 2 years and there's not a spot of corrosion in sight. If the holes are just a fraction bigger than the bolts and it's all tight there shouldn't be any movement to allow the paint to rub away.

I would recommend you fit it like the lower brace with captive nuts and bolts that way you can remove it without needing to jack car up to undo nuts under turret's

Wish I did that to mine

I also painted the drill holes

Thanks for everyones posts, comments, pictures and advice.

So for now i'll keep the brackets on as planning to fit it with nutshells which are similar to captive nuts. Where the brace doesn't seem to level out on the turrets i'll put down to it just needing the bolts to pull it that further little bit.

Finally i'll just shift it a little bit to the right and push it against the 2 piping going into the bulkhead :strong:
