Will I kill her car?!

Featured Replies

I've just tried to move our other car and it's dead as a Dodo :( No previous problems so I'm guessing she's left something on and drained the battery...

..... Now I need to move this asap and so I was considering using my car to jump her, but I have it in the back on my head that this is a bad idea due to the difference in engines? Mine is the 1.9tdi and her's is a 1.6 petrol Civic.

Am I right?!

That's fine, you have to be careful if it's the other way round

How old is the Civic? I've read plenty of people saying jumping newer cars can cause issues with electrics and stuff but I've not had any issues. Jumped plenty of cars with the Fabia and visa versa

But saying that my 1.8 octy was fine jumping a 2.7tdi jag!

I've jumped a 1.9 TDI from a tiny Nissan Micra before, both cars survived without issue, but its owner was a bit nervous :)

Just a load of scaremongering, in some cases it can kill a battery (never seen it happen). But how do a brakedown service start a car with a flat battery?

Modern electronics are sensitive to jump starting, for example my D3 A8 cannot be jump started as it will fry the battery management ECU. If my battery goes flat, it must be recharged using the dedicated charging terminals in the boot or replaced with a new one.

Attach your jump leads, allow the running car to run on a fast idle for a few minutes so as you get a little charge into the dead battery, keep the revs up and get somebody else to start the other car, when it is running carefully remove the leads.

I have never heard of issues with engine size when jump starting, 12 volts is 12 volts maybe at a different amperage but it should be fine, I have jump started a Mini off a John Deere tractor and I have started tractor off a Mini.

I agree with Mannyo though, I have seen the battery management in the Audi and it is far to complex for its own good.

Evel Knievel would jump it no problem....

cheers for all the info people....

It's a 2005 1.6 Vtec  ..... I had read the same about modern cars and frying stuff and I have a stronger battery than originally fitted so thought I would pose the question :D

I've bought some jump leads and will give it a go on saturday. Touch wood

They usually carry a whopping power pack on board capable of starting most things. :D

Connect positive cable first, then negative.

When removing, disconnect negative first, then positive.

We've started a Manitou off an Audi 80 before now, worked well.
