CCleaner problem

Featured Replies

Downloaded CCleaner direct from Piriform, let it do it's shiz but after it finished, it showed McAffee AV in the clean up list. Fine, except I don't have it and it's not in the add/ remove prog list :wonder:

Win 7 Pro with MSE and Windows F/Wall. I ran MBam which only picked up one dodgy item.

Any thoughts?

I know Macafee is bundled with some software (can't remember what) and is easily installed if not un-ticked. Maybe a left over string has been found?

possibly, I'm usually careful to always use the custom install route. Maybe a ghost/ artefact I suppose.

You did have it installed at some point ??

Or did you ever run that mcafee secuirty scan that comes with many downloads

nope, always do a clean install with a DVD. Not too fussed about it really, just curious why CCleaner showed a prog that I don't have. I might do another install over the weekend and run it again.

Adobe install a McAffee internet AV system if you arent careful about unticking the box during updates to Flash and Shockwave; it might be the cause of the unknown McAfee entry

You jogged my memory, that's the one.

Many thanks, GG. As mentioned, my memory jogged too. I do seem to recall an Adobe install that I may have not opted for the custom option :/ Damn them!

Thanks. I'll try that and see.

not Adobe, then :/ Killed Reader XI and Flash. Uninstalled them. Ran CC again, McAfee still there. Reboot, ran CC again, still there.

I have had to run the McAfee Removal Tool in the past to get rid of that programme completely.

which of the top hits for that search did you use, Denis?

I think the McAffee program attaches itself to your Web browser, at least it does if you are using FireFox.

It also probably protects itself, so trying booting into Safe mode and removing it.

I did get rid of it after getting it installed by Adobe a few months back, but for the life of me I cannot remember exactly what I did.

Ran the McAfee removal tool, dowloaded from Softpedia UK Mirror. It's gone :) Cheers for the help all.

McAfee and Norton both do their own removal tools.

There's a reason it shouldnt be easy to remove a security app.

I notice it's common on flash to get asked to install this or that, and on some downloads ,if you tick to remove, it gets added anyway . Best way to check is to go to control panel/ program & features and see if it's installed.

Norton and McAfee are also two of the worst though IMO :(

I've had a lot of problems removing norton/MacAfee stuff. On a lot of occasions I've had to format and re install to get shot of mentions of either. I've had it on earlier OS said as removed and gone into Regedit to find it still there. Control panel says NO- Regedit says YES. So to LEE01- it can be there without you knowing it is.

Memory bumped, yes, I had to go through the registry and remove every mention of it, and delete folders associated with it -I also posted on several tech forums and called it MALWARE.

True - but their own removal tools should be making a better job of clearing the traces of their existence than they actually do.

Not the first time I have had these (mainly on other peoples computers) and ended up having to delve deep to shut down processes and remove traces from these two even after the uninstaller had finished (surely neither should have any processes running after uninstalling with their own removal tools)

The uninstall option does keep stuff behind.  The removal tool should remove everything else.
