rSAP - am I being thick ?

Featured Replies

Gradually working my way through the new car / handbook and this rSAP thing sounds good if you are able to get texts etc read out. I have an LG/Google Nexus 4.

Thing is, I can't find anything in the various menus to connect/download rSAP although normal Bluetooth works fine.

Am I missing something here? Do I need to download/buy something ?

It's a brand new Elegance so I had kind of hoped it would all be there.....

Thanks

Just because it is in the handbook, doesn't mean you have it fitted!

Find the part number of the BT module under the driver's seat (assuming you don't have it built into an Amundsen+ head unit) then check this online to see if it supports rSAP and/or HFP.

If it is HFP only, you'll need a new BT module and an antenna / aerial for it.

Hi I have part number 3C8035730D and I cannot get it work, possible because an iPhone

My part number is 3C8 035 730 D, does anyone know if/how compatible this is ?

Thanks

Part number should be along these lines: 5N0 035 730 C or 5P0 862 335 D

The 5N0 / 5P0 part is the originating manufacture & vehicle;

The 035 730 or 862 335 is the part number (common across the VAG range);

The suffix letter C or D is the revision to the part number.

We need all these parts to be able to help you further. The part numbers you have given don't in my experience or knowledge, match any VAG BT modules.

Hi the part number on mine is the sane and the code is 3C8035730D and according to another thread, this is the model that supports rSAP. There is quite a lot on Briskoda about this issue it seems the make of phone is often the issue. What I am a little confused about is do I need to have wifi activated via Vagcom?

iPhones don't support rSAP, only HFP AFAIK.

No need to have wi-fi activiated by VAG-COM/VCDS - once an rSAP connection is established the Wi-Fi menu should appear in the MFD's Phone menu.

The 'D' revision of this module, as per your photo, supports rSAP and Wi-Fi.  My car came fitted with a 3C8035730B module (rSAP only) which I replaced with 3C8035730D, like yours, to add Wi-Fi.

Any idea then if I have the "correct" version why I can't see any of these options for rSAP and wifi?

It might be the phone. Iphones for example simply dont do RSap and connect in HFP (non premium) mode. Also unless it has a letter suffix its too early a module to do these types of things.

But if my phone is "supposed" to work - a Nexus 4 and my wife has a Galaxy S3 that's also meant to be OK then something's not quite right?

Firstly, check (though I'm sure you have already) that you've got the premium (rSAP) option selected under the MFD under Phone | Settings | Phone Settings | Phone Mode.

If when connected to the phone it just shows the Bluetooth logo rather than "premium" plus bluetooth logo then it's connected only by HFP, not rSAP.  If the Nexus 4 doesn't support rSAP (which seems probable from a quick google search) then it may well be worth you trying the trial version of this app which can implement the rSAP profile on some devices that don't have it:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android_rsap.BluetoothRSAP

Even though both of my Samsungs support rSAP natively, I use this app because the implementation seems more robust than Samsung's own and maintains a stable connection when using wi-fi (whereas the standard rSAP bugs-out repeatedly).  Installing this may need you to root your device, however.

Hope this helps...

That's great. Thanks. Will try it and let you know.

I am guessing/hoping that the benefits of having rSAP are with the effort?!

The Galaxy S3 - should work (can't comment on the Nexus 4).  I think all software versions of my S3 worked with both Samsung's rSAP implementation and that from android-rsap.com.

That is correct, since Iphone doesn't support rsap (and may other things) :@ .

That number is the latest model, capable of rsap AND wifi!

Well, bought the app which seems to have installed ok and it appears on the MFD.

I think I do need to root though which is something I've not done before and seems a bit scary !

Do you have a recommendation for a "safe" way of doing this ? So many options if you just Google it, and look complicated and some will be dodgy no doubt.

Thanks

Glad you got it working.

Rooting sounds scary, sometimes looks scary but in practice isn't.  A quick google suggests there are many ways - depending on the installed version of Android.

For my Samsungs I used Chainfire's CF Auto-Root which seems to work with the Nexus 4 as well:

Mark, really appreciate all of your help with this. I will try the rooting.

BUT I wanted to check what I will be able to do as a result of all of this that I cant with a standard Bluettoth connection.

I believe it's texts being read out (good) but what else ?

Have a look through this site http://www.android-rsap.com/ it's the guy who developed the app you've installed already.

Basically the Nexus phones (4 & 5) have the hardware requirements to opperate in rSAP mode, but default android doesn't have the software built in.

In order for the app to get the required access to the hardware you will need to root it. Before rooting it you must unlock the bootloader. Back up your phone as this will wipe everything.

There guide on the site is very good.

Once you've unlocked your bootloader and rooted your phone you need to install and run the Bluetooth SIM access install app first: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android_rsap.rsapinstall&hl=en and then run the main Bluetooth SIM Access app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android_rsap.BluetoothRSAP&hl=en

Hope this helps. I am running the same set up but with a Nexus 5.

A thing to bare in mind is that once you've unlocked the bootloader/rooted on your phone some apps will no longer work, things such as mobile banking and similar. This is due to security concerns over naughty things that could be done with a rooted phone. I also believe Google Play Movies won't work either.
