xenon afs question

Featured Replies

On a 2010 model (FL model) does the AFS only work making the lights go sideways.

Seen videos that some AFS systems use the light sensor to lower or raise the beem hight.

Are you confusing AFS with the cornering function? The height is done automatically on all xenon equipped cars.

The bi-xenon's on the Superb adjust the length of the beam to take into consideration different speeds and weather conditions.

So the AFS on the octavia is plain simple.

Only side movement, the distance of the beam remains de same weather on dark roads or driving in thw city full of lights.

xenon afs 1 = sideways (dynamic/bending/cornering) + height adjust (load level at startup only).

xenon afs 2 = range/length/weather adjust + sideways (dynamic/bending/cornering) + height adjust (load level at startup only).

superb comes with afs 2.

octavia comes with afs 1.

Thanks JR RS

Anyone think its possible to turn into AFS 2

Friend says it has something to do with the interior mirror

Not sure that the above is correct.  I'm pretty sure mine has AFS II.

Edit:  Ok, a quick search through some old literature -

..from the 2012MY uk Octavia brochure, factory options section says this:    "Xenon headlights and AFS II, with dynamic angle control and integrated front headlight washers"

afs2 was only offered on the Octavia in some countries, like NZ & Ireland, and from wat u've posted, also in the uk.

most others, like here in oz, never got the option to spec up to afs 2.

I also hear that some countries incorrectly stated "afs 2" in their brochures, but never got it.

have a look at rim of the projector, if it has "bending xenon" engraved, u only have afs 1.

if its has "afs II" engraved, then u have afs 2.

I've never seen one with afs 2.

this one for example is afs 1.  u can see "bending xenon" on the top left.

AFS is irrelevant, if you have Bi-Xenon like in Superb, you have all features.

Ocatvia has only the ones stated above.

My headlight also says "Bending Xenon".  Brochure says AFS II...  could be the brochure is wrong as you say (those pesky marketing types!)

Looking at the manual it makes no reference to modifying the beam for weather, just the bending around corners and the self leveling for load so from the description that does look like AFS I not II.

It looks like the leveling function is also dymamic though.. never knew this - i though it just set itself on startup but it looks like it adjusts the level while you drive to avoid dazzling.

"Headlights fitted with Xenon bulbs* adapt automatically to the load and driving state of the vehicle (e.g. accelerating, braking) when the ignition is switched on.."

Makes sense - for instance, one might pick up four fat people on the way to ones destination.

I am not sure I ever notice the bending function.

It is all very confusing.

The up and down adjustment (or self-levelling feature) is standard on all xenon set-ups. It's purpose is to level-check the beams and to compensate for undulating road surfaces and for different vehicle loads.

All I know is that:

The xenon's on the pre-facelift MkII Octavia do nothing out of the ordinary, they are just brighter.

The xenon's on the facelift MkII Octavia are able to look left and right.

The MkII Octavia xenon's (at least in the UK) are not able to adjust the length or pattern of the beam to allow for different speeds and weather conditions, this is reserved for the Skoda Superb.
