VRS 4 Wheel alignment settings...are these ok ?

Featured Replies

Hi, just need a bit of advice as weather these settings are ok for my VRS...

had 2 new front tyres fitted when this alignment was done back last November..

had 2 new rear tyres fitted last august { as my previous tyres had sawtoothed badly } had to have a new drivers lower arm fitted as they could not adjust it to the correct settings as a bush had seized ???

was told that my rear settings are slightly out but nothing to worry about...

car drives straight with no vibration or pull,  feels rock steady, tyres seem to be wearing evenly, should i have it checked or just leave it until they need replacing in around 12 months time ?

rear tyres have done about 8k with 5.5 left

front tyres have done about 5k with 6m left

your advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys !

Everything except rear camber is well within tolerance and rear toe is slightly out but that could just be your wheel set up. Not sure if rears are adjustable. Other than that everything looks good.

as far as i know, everything is adjustable, may just periodically check tyres for uneven wear, other that that i may just resort to the old proverb...

if it aint broke..dont fix it !

but i have to say that the goodyear assy's 2 are the dogs dangly bits !

Are they really that good? Once funds allow (wife just spent 4k decorating house) I need to change all four tyres as when I bought it it had a range of random budget unknowns on them so all need to be changed for something that's more to my OCD level lol

Front looks OK.  Maybe a little bit conservative on the camber & I'd try undoing the lower ball joint nuts & get a bar in there to force them outwards & give a bit more -ve on both sides but the cross camber is spot on

Rear has too much camber - esp on the Left - even if it is within spec.  If you just drive 7/10ths max most the time around corners then you'd want to screw the rear camber back to as close to the -0.8 as you can (Given the saw-tooth issues I'd actually try & get it up near -0.25 but the specialist will chuck a wobbly at that probably).

The -0.4 toe (out) is OK but I'd be aiming to get it more like -0.2 per side rather than -0.4/0.0.  0.0 would be nice for the sawtooth tyre wear but then it won't turn-in nicely & may be a bit drifty side-to-side and feel like you're towing a trailer with a misaligned axle.

The back end is more adjustable than the front so don't take any rubbish that it can't be done.  The adjusters are near the exhaust so sometimes the tech doesn't want 3rd degree burns.

Should all be green. take it back!

^  ditto.  anything red means its out of tolerance.

tbh i'd want less toe - the closer you get to zero the longer your tyres will last.  camber on the front is ok, rear is not matched side to side.  could do better IMO.

Is it Silverline at Warwick you have used?

They did mine Octavia and I also have slightly out on the camber LHS rear, they told me that there is no adjustment in the rear of the Octavia.

Can anyone tell me exactly what can be done adjustment wise to the rear? Camber, Castor, Toe??

Camber & toe are adjustable.

Have a look in this diagram.

Items 2,3 &4 is the eccentric adjuster for the camber.

Items 1,5 & 6 is the eccentric for the toe.  (or vice-versa).

The rear is more easily adjustable than the front (you move the subframe on the front).

Probably on the front 0 toe would be good (I didn't realise it was toeing-in) but the rear you want a fraction out.

The vehicle will experience dynamic toe changes under acceleration, cruise & braking & cornering.

You need a little bit of static toe-out (-ve toe) or zero toe so that when you are cruising along the motorway the front toe is near zero as the driven wheel will pull the arms forward a fraction - especially if you have the squishy "comfort"  bushes etc that our Octavias come with.  The tighter you make the front end the less difference between static & dynamic toe you will occur.

On a RWD you need a bit of toe-in as the arms get pushed back a bit.

Zero toe will also tend to cause tramlining & make the steeing feel a bit vague.  On the rear it might cause the tail to drift a bit side-to-side and also make the car understeer too much on initial turn-in.  Every car is different so it varies.

If you toe-out a bit on the rear it will give you something similar to what they were trying to achieve on 4WS Hondas & Mazdas.  Peugeot do similar & labelled it Passive 4-Wheel Steering.  When I had my Liberty/Legacy I had it on about 6mm total toe-out as it dialled out a lot of the understeer (was actually dangerous at speed if you weren't expecting it).
