Factory fitted alarm, very low volume

Featured Replies

I have a 2010 Skoda Octavia (FL) vRS and when I ordered the car, I asked for a factory fitted alarm. Worked great for a few years. While it still works, now, when the alarm goes on, the volume coming of the horn (I presume it has its own horn) is so low that you cant really hear it if in the house or a few feet away. I presume either the horn has died, somehow the volume of it was turned down (if such a thing is possible) or there is dirt/mud in the horn...

Any idea how to try and get this rectified. If anyone has had the same problem, there may be an FAQ manual somewhere (even how to replace the horn). A home alarm fitter had a look at it but couldnt figure out anything

Most VAG group cars alarms seem to die in time as the back up batteries inside leak and knacker the unit up.

The alarm on my Altea has gone this way.

The Octavia one is ok at the minute.

Its a good chance that is your problem also.

Thanks for response.

Any idea how much a replacement one would cost?

When i was looking at replacing mine the price was around the £90 mark for a new alarm siren.

Wow. That's steep. Is that for supply and fit?

I havent priced it up but my mate did for his A3 3.2V6 and it was circa £180 for the whole part.

Sometimes you an repair it by taking apart and replacing the cells inside as sometimes the board is ok and just the cells are knacked.

you can get new cells from Maplin or RS etc. Prob replace them for less than £10.

My one in the Passat filled with water. I didn't bother to replace it. Who pays attention anyway to a fast smash and grab?

Its good to get the alarm chirp activated (can do this without coding if you have maxidot - ATA confirm its called) as each time you lock/unlock the car it utilises the siren to produce the chirps.

Its quite clever as it seems to be designed to sound reasonably loud in the vicinity of the car but the noise doesnt particularly carry so doesnt annoy the neighbours; it also gives the siren a regular workout and identifies if it goes faulty (the chirp will sound weird or not make a chirp at all if it borks).
