Magnetic sump plugs

Featured Replies

Hi all, After reading the posts about these plugs wondering if anyone has tried them, Any feedback good or bad?

Had one on my mk1 and my e36, do what they say on the tin and will prob fit one on the mk2 when I drop the oil.

I posted a similar thread question a while back and the general consensus was that it wouldn't do any harm and, on an older engine, may be beneficial.

There were those that said they were not needed if you did regular oil changes which quality oil (6 monthly).

I had one fitted in the gearbox of my old Nissan Primera which was standard on these, When changing the gearbox oil there was always metal flakes on it, But there again in the engine surely the filter will remove anything in the oil..

I certainly can't see them doing any harm, even if the benefits may be arguable.

Do manufacturers ever fit them?  And if not, I wonder why not?  The unit cost would be trivial in large quantities.

Magnetic sump plugs are not new, years ago most cars had them as the norm, when changing the oil you always found steel fililings around them. Remember that they will only remove metal partical that have a iron /steel content, white metal from bearings and any alloy parts will not be removed from the oil by this method.

These things have been around for donkeys years. Anything that helps collect foreign matter in the oil and prevent it circulating can't be bad (& they certainly did that). Just one word of caution, years back I came across a plug that had lost its magnet, luckily it came out with the old oil.

Can't hurt but there's a lot less ferrous metal in an engine these days.

You can also plonk a strong (rare-earth?) magnet on the outside of your oil filter.  It might possibly stop the filter clogging as quick.
