Master cylinder fault?

Featured Replies

So I had standard 256 front brakes on my vrs and they wernt the best of shape, the brakes worked but under heavy braking they took abit long to stop and the peddle went about half way down, I have now had 312s fitted and they are sharper but still feel the same under heavy braking they got bled several times all round, not sure if it is the master cylinder but would appreciate if someone could advise me :)

Have you checked, or had checked, the pipe that leads from the servo?

Swmbo had similar symptoms, and there was a small split in the pipe, brake efficency was badly compromised.

The pipe is just a few £'s, and easy to fit.

When was the brake fluid last changed, its meant to be done every two years regardless of mileage.

I'll take a look later thanks :) the fluid was all changed yesterday

Mine is squishy too - fluid change last August apparently. Will have a look at the pipes.

Mines pretty firm and sharp as you first touch them but you can push the peddle down quite away and is spongey :/ if I have a split pipe would they not be sharp at all?

Diesel brakes usually feel weird due to a thing called diesel creep. The servo always has maximum vacuum available, as it's a mechanical pump to supply the vacuum and not manifold vacuum.

Servo and hoses test,

1: Engine OFF press brake pedal several times, it should go rock hard and not creep

2: Keep pressure on brake pedal and start the engine, the brake pedal should sink a few inches, then go firm.

Note: Do NOT apply too much force to the brake pedal during this test.

No help here but unless it's a strange bitza, your VRS had 288s up front before you fitted the 312s.

Thanks Moggy - tested mine this morning and it did what you wrote so guess a fluid or air problem.
