roof wrap went wrong :( crap lacquer

Featured Replies

Hey folks so I thought that I fancied carbon wrapping the vrs roof. Red car black carbon roof nice or so I thought after a hour or 2 of playing around with a sheet of vinly it was starting to look good, that was until I came to smooth the edges and along top of windscreen and boot lid. Do you think I could get it tight and flat to roof NOPE so I continued for anothet hour rubbing and smoothing and still had bubbles and then creased the bloody film :( not happy at this point so I decided to get it all trimmed and attack it. It just would not stick along windscreen edge, then like magic it seemed done :) :) until the drive to work this morning, a strange humming noise from car got to work and holy **** most of the vinly was gone along with most of the lacquer. Now my roof looks complete crap and im GUTTED. Car looks very very poorly. Im now thinking do I just get the roof sprayed black or just sand the rough bits of and get it professionally wrapped ( at £130 though) :( proper gutted

HAve a look a dip your car .com USA based company with good instructional vids

Basically it's plasti dip and it's all DIY so may save yourself some money

You can't import from USA but stuff is available on eBay

Yup, I might do this to mine as my paint has been ruined by bird **** and tree sap. It'll be matte black plastidipped using a B&Q HVLP sprayer.

I did the same when i first wrapped my roof. My fault i used cheap crap wrap. So i persevered and bought 3m wrap which is bubble free guaranteed. Worth spending £50.

And what a difference. I did my roof second time in less than 1 hour. I used a de wax liquid / panel cleaner to make sure metal was clean and dirt free. Then I removed roof aerial and black roof trim.  I then cut wrap to just over size. Then Laid the main section of wrap to roof , smoothed that down. Then used a heat gun to fold wrap down into the front screen and trim off with sharp knife. Then used heat gun to the roof edges into the guttering where the black trim will cover it. Trick hear is use heat gun to keep wrap flexible and tacky.

Then trim the back section to lay down with a overlap back of roof to tailgate hinges. Job done 1 hour later and love it

since then done a few bit's inside car and lamin x the head lights and indicators

How do the trims come out?????

It might increase the price if they have to flat off the laquer though? Where it's pealed up

Im thinking of flating it down before it goes in to try and keep price down.... what grade would anyone recommend????

I would let them do the whole job, flatting and spraying, then if you have any problems they cannot blame anything on you.

Above is true but if doing a DIY job loads of sappy water and work your way up from 400 to 800 don't use coarse stuff and put scores in it!

If it's still stuck well you might get away with just doing the edge and keying the rest up

How to take roof trim off??????

That I don't know, I would suggest that they would probably mask it up

Yeah they just pop out dude, well i say pop out as they take a little persuasion

You need to pop out the 8 roof rack blanks, then pull out the end plastic pieces on the roof trim (hatch end) then use a flat screwdriver to lever the roof trim off slowly going left and right to unclip the trim from it's position.

don't think so as it is bonded with the screen. I managed to heat the wrap enough to make a really good seal and then trim with sharp knife.

I'll not quote again, just so quickly :p  but... how much (edit -) heat can the vinyls take / need to get it nice and workable?

I'll need to know when me dash stuff arrives :)
