cracked windscreen help

Featured Replies

Hi all,

swmbo has had a lorry throw a stone chip onto her windscreen.

I would imagine it cant be repaired as there is a crack through it [around 10inch long]

its in the bottom corner and is not that noticeable.she is doing short journeys at the mo while we decide what to do

the car is a suzuki wagon r+

money is tight at the mo and she has high insurance and has no noclaims bonus so am thinking we should keep the insurance out of it

Any ideas of a cheap [but legal] way of replacing it?

Claim on the insurance, it will not affect the premium at renewal and will only cost £50'ish depending on policy. If the crack is in line of site then she is committing an offence if she continues to use the car.

Yup doesnt affect your ncb

All you need to pay is the windscreen excess, generally £50-100

You'd be surprised. Plenty of glass excesses are £75-£100 nowadays. I need mine doing :(

Yes.

Much smaller excess of sub-£100 for windscreen replacement.

If it's that big a crack - u MUST repair it else it will get worse.

Obviously it will failed MOT and a keen Police could possible stop you for distraction to view.

Though I did drive a car with a long crack down the middle of the screen from Wales to Yorkshire once - lol

Else a private windscreen replacement should be about £125-£200 tops...

Be careful of any jobs worth traffic police as they will do you for it under construction and use laws.

SWMBO failer her MOT for a similar crack. They considered it to be dangerous not just a visibility issue.

They've just issued a new MOT special notice to confirm fail criteria for windscreen damage.  It has always been 10mm for zone A (in front of the driver), 40 mm for the rest of the area swept by the windscreen wipers, however damage greater than these dimensions is allowed, providing it doesn't affect the drivers view of the road.

Our van at work had a crack running the full width of the windscreen just above the wipers and it passed numerous MOTs like it.

Try trebling that price for a windscreen and fitting

I had 2 screens replaced and one was a 2004 Subaru at a cost of £185 fitted

Why?,  it was perfectly safe, too many people have been 'conditioned' to think that if a windscreen is less than perfect it'll explode in a big ball of flame, yet they couldn't give a toss about the state of their tyres.

I personally wouldn't drive it and my company wouldn't let me drive it either thats just my thoughts

It most likely passed the MOT because the crack was not in the swept area of the wiper.

I had one pass with a large crack at the bottom of the screen but the crack did not go into the swept area.
