What to do? Second car/bike or downgrade?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So im in a bit of a quandry (that how you spell it?) at the moment....

Ive currently got a Octavia 3 Vrs tdi which ive had since November and im proper chuffed with it - just done 6,000 miles BUT ive just brought a new house and will be moving so am going to be adding another 20 miles a day on to what im already travelling meaning that due to my shift pattern etc....16,000 miles a year in just work mileage....thats not including shopping, visiting family, holidays etc.

My Octy is on PCP and I contracted 12,000 a year at that point. So including the extra for fuel a month im not sure what to do, heres my thoughts.

1) Buy a second diesel car - say £1000-£1500, something like an MG ZT/75 - Use that some of the week, keeping the mileage on the Octavia down and in really nice nick etc. This would be purely a work hack.

2) Go to skoda and enquire about a fully specced Rapid Elegence tdi with all the bits, 15,000 miles a year on PCP and as such bring my payments down a little to.

3) Do my bike test - I already have clothing etc - and buy a 600 or similar for work - having the Octavia when I want or the weathers pants.

4)Take the hit at the end that ive exceeded my agreed mileage - I reckon circa £2000

Kindest Regards

Unless you plan on handing your car back at the end of the PCP there's no real harm in exceeding the agreed mileage, unless you go crazy with the mileage and the PX value ends up less than the balloon payment.

Thanks for the reply guys....I mean obviously no one wants to end up with negative equity on the agreement - If I kept it, It would probably be going back at 3-3.5 years old with around 55,000 to 60,000 miles on it. Id always planned on having another Vrs or a Yeti 170 4x4 BUT it would be dependant on the rate via pcp and also if Skodas CEO is still planning on targeting a more "affluent" market in which case the prices will have gone up.....

It will end up costing you more to run a second vehicle. Just stick with the octy.

Yep seems crazy to run a second car when you already have a nice efficient diesel car, if you're only looking at 2k for the extra miles put them on the Octy, its going to cost you in maintenance (MASSIVE unknown with a 'new' 1.5k car, tax, insurance, depreciation (ok could be minor depending on your choice)... and the vRS is going to be more reliable (touch wood!) than a hack banger...

Agree with the above-the most cost effective way is to stick to 1 car. The running costs of the bike would probably be the same if not more than your end of PCP payment - high insurance, VED and tyres not to mention servicing etc. Bikes are for fun and don't make much sense unless your commuting in heavy city traffic.

Thanks guys - I guess the problem lays in the unknown of a high mileage work hack, I do appreciate all your input

If you are on a 3 year PCP then that only equates to another £55 a month over the term.

The tax, insurance and maintence for a second car could easily exceed that, bearing in mind the second car is probably going to be less economical / comfortable / safe.

You are already paying for the highest part of the depreciation, might aswell enjoy the car and use it. :)

You could also call Skoda finance and request your agreement to be amended to account for extra mileage?

Sold my 2011 vRS and got a diesel ZT days before I completed on my house (got the MG the night before). Bike also sold after the summer and have thousands of £'s of gear sat begging me to get another!!!! But I must be sensible, as of 2 hours 20 minutes ago I no longer have a salary. I am happy with the ZT and to be honest and it was only bought as a stop gap run around. I was thinking of just ordering a Mk3 vRS earlier today as a present to myself, but I know that would shaft the odds of a new bike and I have some plans for the house........ The ZT has 35bhp less than the vRS(Mk2 FL speaking) and is returning slightly better MPG (mainly short cold engine runs at moment, long run I have no doubt Octy would be better). To be honest the ZT has with new discs & pads on 2 weeks ago cost less than your suggested budget and I really am not seeing the point in replacing a perfectly good car that owes me nothing with one that will just depreciate more per year for first 5-6 years than this thing cost.

The idea of running a ZT as a second car could be more economical than you think. I am aware of an insurance company which as a second car will give classic insurance on any MG over 5 years old if that is of any use to you?

In respect of a ZT: Economy would be less than a Mk3 vRS (depending how each driven little in it though), Comfort = Can't speak for Mk3 but far more comfortable than a Mk2 FL lol stock ride/ handling better too IMO, Safety = Not an unsafe car by any means, Mk3 Octy would definitely be the choice if in a serious RTC!

Strongly agree, especially where PCP is involved.

I am rather fond of my ZT. The 75/ZT's were ahead of their time and have more awards then any model of Octavia has ever won, in good nick they are no different than a modern car in a driving sense.

The 20K+ difference in price of buying each is just staggering to me now.  :whew:  But give me time I am still on the hunt for a specific vRS to replace it

Option 4.   Or re negotiate the annual higher mileage with the Lease company.     Other means of transport will cost you more overall.

I'd ask to see how much your new milage would add to the PCP payments.

If looking purely at the cost I would not run another car.

Sure, it may cost about the same if you buy something old/cheap... until the older one out of warranty needs a turbo or clutch.

A bike isn't cheap to run unless your planning to commute on a 125.

600 will probably use more fuel than the VRS. Motorcycle manufacturers have only started to think about mpg recently. PCP won't be an issue just buy the car out at the end and the mileage charges don't apply.

If you're doing 16-20k a year then you're probably using a diesel as it's supposed to be used. To save any money you're going to have to buy a very cheap second car or take a big step down.

i.e Old Octy 2.0 SDI.

I'd do your sums very carefully before you make a jump.

Agreed. I used to ride a 4 stroke 250, and to be fair, it was brilliant on fuel, anything over that won't be though.

Also bear in mind that bikes tend to need more regular serving than cars.

Your right there mate. My 125 used to get about one mpg for every CC haha.

My SV650 though , gets similar to my 1.2 fabia. (Around the 45-50mpg mark)

Cars 10,000 mile servicing , and I change the bikes oil every 3,000 (1,000 ahead of the recommended intervals, for good measure)
