Fitting a powered Sub to a standard HU (mp3 stream)

Featured Replies

Hi All

I've just acquired a lovely Octavia VRS MKII with an 'MP3 Stream' headunit.  I'd like to shift the powered subwoofer from my old car into this one but no sure if it's possible?  Anyone know if this head unit has a line out I could use?

TIA

It doesn't have a line out, I had to use a line level converter and carefully hack into a speaker output.

Cant for the life of me remember how I found out which were the right cables... There might well be a wire diagram on the back of the head unit, I cant really remember.

Works well though!

Thanks brown_d9 - never heard of a line level converter before but they seem to be immensely useful for those without a line out - basically a couple of resistors in a box!

I don't really want to remove the HU and find the right pins so will try and piggyback off the rear speakers somehow.

While I'm here, has anyone powered an amp from the cd changer 12v supply? - it's nothing special, just a 12" vibe active sub, 200W RMS I think and I ran it no probs through a relatively thin cable in my last car directly from the 12v socket supply on dash, no overheating.

The speakers are on a standard ISO connection as part of the Quadlock. If memory serves, this part can be removed from the Quad, so you could make up an in-line hack to connect the line adapter.

I don't think the CD-changer requires much juice to run. IIRC it gets it's power from the headunit.

This may help a little, and it shows the pin-outs for the speakers too:

I recently changed my heasunit and installed an Amp aswell, took the best part of 20 minutes to run a 14awg cable with inline fuse from the battery to the boot!

My amp is 150w RMS and has a 30a fuse inside. You also may need to run a switched live to turn it on, not sure if the canbus system can be used for remote switching for an amp? Otherwise it will be on permanently.

I think the CD changer has 1 multi core lead which plugs into the headunit, don't recal seeing a seperate power line :/

14awg..........you are kidding aren't you?

Could be 4....got me thinking now!

14awg is speaker wire. When you buy it normaly you get 2 runs stuck together, 14awg is not thick enough for any amp lol

...just about enough for a power trigger
