Folding mirrors vRS retrofit?

Featured Replies

We all know that the UK-spec vRS was robbed of folding mirrors in comparison to its Euro counterparts :(

Whilst I love my car, folding mirrors was one my original "wants" so its a love through gnashed teeth ;)

Anyone have any idea as to the odds of a retrofit? The elegance offers as a £100 option:

"Electrically adjustable, heated and foldable door mirrors with auto dimming, Boarding-Spots and memory function"

I thought they were standard on the Elegance? At least they were when I ordered mine a few weeks ago...

I would guess a retrofit would be a bit of a ballache as you'd need the motors and for it to be coded (by the dealer?) and possibly even new wing mirrors themselves, painted etc...

I just fold mine manually when the car is parked within a narrow street. It takes just one second to do and one to undo when you feel it is necessary. It's also one less thing to go wrong.

They are.... but he's got a vRS, dude! :)

I would like them too.  Nearly all VAG cars which share those mirrors have them (at least as an option) but the top of the range Octy doesn't FFS :(

Indeed folding mirrors are standard on an Elegance.

The option you mention is not £100 but £700 as it has to be ordered with the electric front seat at £600.

Should at least be an option on the vRS

Folding mirrors on RS are standard in New Zealand. Electric seat not needed either.

I also like locking the doors individually, winding up the window with a handle, using my arm muscles to turn the steering wheel (only wimps want power steering) and manually releasing the pressure on the brakes when i'm skidding in to the path of an on coming car.

They're just four more things to go wrong.....

:giggle:

haha, wouldn't it be nice if the car opened the door, put the seat belt on, indicated, fillled itself up with petrol, and wiped our a***s for us all? Don't get me wrong, some aids are extremely useful, but plenty of people still enjoy their cars without a host of added gadgets.

I did ask SK Uk why folding mirrors weren't on the Vrs list a while ago, and they couldn't say, except maybe in the past it wasn't a popular option when they were. can't think that was a reason, just an answer for my question. it was almost a deciding point when I ordered, but decided to just live with it, even after 4 years of folding them when I go down my narrow drive on my current car. I expect a few very near miss or even hit incidents when I get it so have gone for black pack so easier to paint :giggle:

I saw someone at work with a 14 plate Rav4. He got out and was just about to shut the door when he stopped, opened the door and folded his mirrors in. There was literally no need for him to do it, other than to show all who were looking that he could do it.

Anyway, it's a feature I'd never use. I avoid parking on main roads and on the odd occasion I do it's a few seconds to fold them in. I can see why they'd come in useful though. Probably a nightmare to fit.

I understand that it isn't on everyone's feature list..... I've just lost enough wing mirrors thanks to plonkers in my lifetime, that it was unusually high on the list for me.

I was just annoyed that (whether you want them or not):

- The competitors have it (Golf GTD, Leon FR)

- The Octavia can have it (Elegance)

- The vRS has it in Europe!  :wall:

We were robbed, guv'nor!  :@

Problem is you can still lose power mirrors....i dread to think how much a replacement folding mirror with boarding spots would be supply and fit from a dealer! Glad I havent got the dimming ones as that'll be even worse!!

Over £700 a piece on a new Merc!

If you don't want them don't spec them, but it should be that, a choice!

Poor that it's not there when elegance has them. That also goes for the mirror lights on elegance. No option on vRS either

But its the age old thing.......in the UK at least the vRS is essentially SE spec with the more powerful engines and sporty add-ons...bit of extra spec here and there but just the same as the Mk2. At least its considerably better spec'd than the standard mk2 vRS with standard xenons, light and lane assistant, PDC, DAB etc etc.

For now at least Elegance spec is still the top equipment level and is signified by the mirrors and fitment of standard nav etc but agree it is rather an oversight that they are not at least a factory option.

Retrofitting would cost a fortune id expect.....replacement mirror units, wiring, coding, likely a different CCM unit not impossible im sure but not worth the cost.

I'm not fussed either way as I wouldn't have specd them. Not looking for it as standard kit but just on the options list

you will need both mirrors and controllers

I did this to my mk2 vrs

If you are buying new you can expect to pay around £800 for the parts
