Featured Replies

Hi all my handbrake cable is stretched 1 side so im ordering new cables. Iv seen the cable on this website

Anyone tell me if this will go to both calipers or do I need to order 2 lots of cables? Also any guesses to why this could of happened? The rear calipers move when its pulled.

I think you need two of them.

I did one on my mkII the other week. Getting the duff cable out of the guide tube was an absolute pig. I ended up cutting it off and drilling out the end in the guide tube.

Defo need 2 cables buddy for each rear caliper. They both  feed up to handbrake .

Not a bad job to replace. Done it a few times now.. The new cables are thicker. You will need to get pliers to twist out the cable into metal tubes to handbrake, as mentioned can be quite tight,

Tight! At one point I had both feet braced on the sill pulling the feckin cable with both hands and it still didn't budge.

lol.  I hear ya

Better to spray WD40 all over the tube and cable end leave for a short while and then get pliers and twist the black plastic part as close to the metal tube as possible and at same time pull. not easy

Tried that.  Mole grips on the guide tube and on the black plastic thing - absolutely nothing happened, except for a sore shoulder and big bruise on my new from kneeling on a wheel nut...

Hacksaw and 8mm drill and out it came, in bits.  Just had to be careful due to the proximity of the fuel lines and tank.

I was going to do the other side but decided not to.  The spare cable is in the shed in case of further problems.

Do these often stretch? Whats can be the course of it happening? Age related?

Has it definitely stretched? Mine was worn and the inner cable seemed to dragging against the outer layer causing the calliper to stick on.

My handbrake rides really high and drivers side cable is alot longer than the other. Iv got a issue with passenger side rear. Appears to be warped disc as it gets hard to turn on only 1 area of the disc. From what I could see both calipers were pulling in when handbrake was pulled but its getting worse and worse. Now the drivers side isnt touching much because its that stretched. Or seems to be?

lol based on your first attempt keep the spare in the shed......

Yes they do, this happens coz the inner cable get trapped in the outer sheath and also general aging and pulling of handbrake to rear caliper. The older cable have a thinner outer sheath that tends to get crushed when stupid garages jack the car up by the rear beam wishbone pivot's Skoda placed the cables in a metal clip / retainer just under the beam wishbone. Year of compression take it's toll.

Also lazy / seized caliper return guides / brackets can stretch cables.

Good maintenance or rear calipers helps

I think you know you can adjust the cable in here:

If you have one cable longer it could be you may having a sticking caliper return mechanism or even a partially seized caliper and or any issue mentioned above.
