Power steering fluid bleeding

Featured Replies

Hi every one again I've replaced a burst power steering pressure pipe and I refilled the the tank and turned the steering left to right and I thought I had got all the air out so started the engine and repeated several times topping up wen necessary and the pump quitened down. Then went for a drive a drive and the whining came back so I checked the level and it is ok anybody got any ideas as to what I should do now thanks again

Hmm that is normally all you need to do per what you have done. Turning lock to lock should get rid of air. Perhaps you need to do it a bit more or maybe you still have air getting in from a split somewhere.

I have turned lock to lock 200 plus times all the air bleeds out and then it re appears but there is no fluid loss I even put a bottle of Lucas stop leak in and still noisy I put a new serpentine belt on today no better going to replace pump and if that doesn't work ile probably scrap it as I hear a new steering rack can spiral into the £1000's

Did you use genuine VAG PAS fluid?

To drain the fluid, open the suction pipe at its lower end, and turn the steering lock-to-lock until no more fluid comes out. If you find any metal in the PAS fluid, clean out both the suction and pressure pipes.

The pump is quite easy to damage if run dry, but the rack should be OK.

A new rack is nowhere near that price buddy. You can also pick up recon ones for £150. Or get a second hand one much cheaper. But to be honest I would drain the fluid and refill as per rbaldwin suggests first before you feel rack is dead as the noise is not permanent.
