Mot fail, help with parts.

Featured Replies

Just failed my MOT on my 1.9tdi fabia. Its done 122k.

First is front brake excessively fluctuating. I presume this means brake disc is warped. Any recommendation. I made the mistake buying EICHER disc last year so there obviously crap.

second is OFFISDE headlamp ain beam image obviously incorrect. MOT guy told me the head light bulb incorrectly fitted but I had a look and they appear ok so no idea on that.

THIRD and FOURTH.

NEARSIDE and OFFSIDE front lower suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement.

I presume this is the dreaded console bush problem.

My plan to replace the disc my self and to remove the lower arm my self then hand it to my local mechanic for him to push out the bush and put new one in.

So can any one recommend what disc to buy and what bushes to get.  This is just a daily runabout so don't need super expensive parts.

Thanks in advance.

Pagid discs and powerflex bushes will see you right.

I'd recommend Pagid brake discs and pads. They are used as original equipment and are very good.

Headlamp maybe needs a bulb if the pattern is wrong and the current one is fitted correctly. Are the plastic lenses excessively clouded?

Yep, sounds like console bushes. The main bush is fitted to the console housing, not the arm. Meyle bushes are good if you want close to OEM.

As above for Disc's.

PSB do good Poly Console Bushes. Currently running a set. £20 a pair, lifetime warranty.

I'm not sure why people frown so much at the console bush, they are simple to remove and fit.

Another vote for the PSB poly console bush, easy to tap in gently with a hammer, so no need to buy specialist tools. Due to the design of them you cant get them in mis-aligned as the inner part of the bush rotates. At £20 they are a easy and cheap option.

Feel no different on the road to me either.

Replace the discs and pads with reputable ones, fix the bulb and job done.

I was reccomended to stick to standard console bushes recently by a motor engineers that was doing my alignment as a polybush does not allow enough flex for pothole impact.

I got a pair of new Skoda ones for £22 from trade part specialist, the sell to the public if you pay cash and supply OEM parts.

As for fitting its best done in situ as it won't mess with the wheel alignment

That's odd because Cupra ones are solid bushes.

Power flex off perfect movement for potholes. Sounds like these motor engineers are not aware of the polybush arrangement for this console application.

RE: headlight angle, my mums passat was about to fail MOT on beam angle, the lenses had gone all misty and it was defracting the beam into the oncoming traffic, abit of Tcut over the "glass" and it was straight again

are your headlights kinda misty?

The only flaw in your plan is that the console bushes are actually fitted into the consoles, not the lower wishbone!

Ic cool. No worries. I can't seem to find anywhere that sells the psb bushes

They were on eBay, just did a search and they don't seem to be listed. They did have a website but can't even find that now!

TPS officially don't sell to the public, if they do you'll get cash trade rates but this will vary by area, if you get trade cash at the dealer the rates will be similar.

The console bush is not intended to flex with pothole impact, that's what the damper, spring and tyre are for, ask yourself where exactly it would flex to in the console? The console bush is required to allow limited rotation of the wishbone as the suspension compresses and decompresses during pot hole impact. From this perspective the Powerflex bush is technically superior as that's pretty much the only type of movement it will allow. They also have lifetime warranty and make the job so much easier/cheaper to do. Even with the correct push/pull tool I would recommend Powerflex. If you fit any bush and don't replace the ball joints then you shouldn't have a need to do alignment as you've not altered the tracking. That said I replaced both wishbones, ball joints and f/r bushes along with drop links when I did them, cost in parts was a little over £100 but it was just as quick/easy to do and will last the life of the car.

For the op never use Eicher, it's ECP's own brand and just contracted out to whoever is the cheapest. That's not to say they are crap (they're certified to the same minimum standard everything else is) but they are not the best. Bosch or Pagid are OE suppliers for VAG and worth the extra. That said warping is usually a fitting issue, you did clean the hub face before install didn't you?

OK just ordered the PSB BUSHES. One last stupid question. I was going to order the brake disc off ebay. There priced £20.99 at the mo for pagid disc from ecp . Would that be £20 for a pair or would I have have to change the quantity to 2?

This is absolute rubbish, the reason the bushes are rubber and not solid is to insulate the body from high-frequency vibration and tyre noise and make the car quieter and more refined, fit solids and watch your car gradually shake itself apart.

Cupra bushes are the correct answer.

I would be AMAZED if £20 was for a pair, you'll need new pads as well to go with them, stop buying cheap rubbish, if you can't afford to run the car then sell it.

I don't know if its a foreign language thing, but it seems to me the OP wants to only change one brake disk. Whatever brand you go for, I would certainly change both left and right to keep it balanced.

Yeah I will be changing both disc. That's kinda common sense. And as far as cheap rubbish that's why I've asked for advice hense the PSB bush purchase and pagid disc. I never said I couldn't afford them.

Yes you need to change the quantity to 2. £20 is for one disc.

Don't fit new discs without new pads. It's extremely bad practice.

Cupra bushes are the correct answer.

There is no correct answer. It's all down to personal choice.

Personal choice is all well and good, but if you look at the advice from the cretinous car mechanic about potholes you'll quickly conclude that most people simply don't have the correct information available to be able to exercise that choice.

When it comes to console bushes the replacement to definitely not choose is something that looks just like the one that Skoda fitted in their factory:

Not one of Volkswagen Group's finest pieces of work, and I don't think they'll sell you one that looks like this any more, but aftermarket ones in the same style are available, and likely to be even weaker and shorter-lived than VAG ones were.  That style is superceded by one that looks and surely is considerably stronger, and is what comes pre-fitted into new consoles. It has part number 1K0407183E and looks like this:

Twice as much rubber supporting the central bit.  These are what are now fitted to my missus's car, and my gut feeling is that they'll not need changing again in the car's lifetime.  Less than a tenner each ISTR, genuine via ebay.

Quick update. I've changed the Rear disc and pads now. And replaced bushes with some PSB ones. I have noticed more vibration in the steering wheel on motorways.its kinda anoying
