turbo issues

Hi my turbo recently decided to blow up and im a bit unsure of the best solution sourcing a replacement. I believe the one fitted is off a pd golf 150 (garrett) and failed due to oil starvation thanks to a massive oil leak on the oil feed pipe. The car has already been mapped has a front mount intercooler, egr delete and de cat exhaust fitted by the previous owner via darkside developments. Hybrids are mega expensive... hybrids rebuilt via independents on ebay etc sound to good to be true and im not sure if I fully trust them. Ive been quoted £400 ish plus vat for a standard 130bhp turbo off turbo dynamics to play it safe obviously wont be as quick... any advice appreciated.

Xman off here does hybrids for around £340 I think.

Check the for sale section for some of his prices and his full username, a few members have purchased from him now and all happy as far as I know.

Yeah filling the pipes full of oil on my way home from work and filling the street with smoke wasn't the best experience could do without it happening again lol. Anyone have a x man turbo currently fitted to theres at the minute? Seems a waste to go backwards.

I have one of XMAN750's Polish hybrid turbos on my car at the moment and it seems to be OK, but I'm not 100% certain because I had various odd things happen since it's been fitted.

The stutter was VERY bad at one point, I'm 99.9% convinced I got the car into limp home mode at one point but it's been fine since the car went back to the dealer that fitted it and I suspect that there was a loose electrical connection somewhere.

I have, obviously, fitted a hybrid to my car without getting a remap, so that could also be an issue. The seller himself seems very straightforward and it was paid for through Paypal so you have some redress if it all goes to heck in a hand basket.

I have one fitted after my standard one snapped its shaft. they do not come set up, stop screw / actuator. so is best taking to a specialist to get done off the car as soon as you get it. Turbo centre set mine up and are very helpful.

Mine Needs map tweaking as is very smokey, but got 183bhp and 308 ftlb everything else standard before it was set up properly.

Haven't had the map changed yet now it is set up due to clutch slipping so have bought a helix smf kit to go in. For the money the turbo is good

Hi rosco ive been in contact with x man and sounds promising did u fit the turbo and then go to a specialist if so was it ok just a bit weary of causing some damage on route if its not boosting / running right on route.I can fit the turbo no problem just adjusting bit looks a bit iffy. Currently re mapped as well so reckon a tweak may be in order once its done.

Under 2000 miles. The turbo came with a test certificate which indicated it had passed some form of quality control.

As has been pointed out, the turbo came absolutely standard for a Garrett so the Skoda dealer that fitted it initially said it didn't fit. Then they called back and said they had it working fine. I think the term is they 'clocked' it. Something to do with turning something around.

One thing I can definitely say is that it'll rack up the mileage quickly!

No mate that was the mistake I made, I fitted it myself and took the car to get mapped, when mapping they said the stop screw couldn't be set accurately on the car so to take it back off and get it set up which I did. Deffinately do not just fit it when you get it, take it to someone who knows there turbos to set the stop screw. The only downfall with these is they don't already come set up, when you buy a turbo you expect to bolt it straight on the car but not the case with these.

Turbo centre in livesedge set mine up and checked it over for about £50 I used them because they are right near my work Andy there is really helpful and knows his stuff. Would recommend sending it there then it will be set up right.

The turbo does need clocking when you get it, if you put your turbo that came off your car next to the Xman one you will see the compressor housings are in different possitions easy job to move around

I have been following XMAN's for sale thread for the Garrett GT1749vc and it says plug and play, sounds like this is not actually true if you have to rotate the housing and get it set up before fitting, did you guys buy the Garrett GT1749vc or one of his other hybrid turbo's ?

Mine was the gt1749vc you can just bolt it on after clocking it but setting the screw and actuator is a lot of hassle.

if I knew what I know now about the turbo I would of just taken it to someone to set it up, bolt it on and then get it mapped in that order. Wasted a lot of time trying to set it up / searching for info on how to set it up.

Xman should advise people to take the turbos to a specialist to set up off the car, or take all the turbos he buys to get set up and sell them for more money.

When I had the turbo on the car I phoned round a few custom mapping companies and was told the stop screw should be set when the turbo is assembled

strange as i was advised that setting the stop screw and actuator on both turbo's i have bought of him

 

tbh its not that hard to do nor is rotating the housing

Yeah he sent me quite an indepth e mail on setting them up. The clocking part is literally just turning round the housing to suit which direction your boost pipes go although ive spoken to my local specialist to enquire to set it up who basicly slated everybody and anything and wont touch anything that is reconditioned hybrid etc. swears by just bolting on a brand new genuine part from tps... 977.00  nightmare
