Taking metal door panel off. Should I remove foam and seal against leaks?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Having to take both the door card and metal panel off to replace door lock.

I've had to seal two other doors so far so guessing this one would need doing soon.

Should I remove the existing foam seal?

If yes, should I go over where it used to be with plumbers gold or something else before putting the plate back on so it's not metal on metal and then rivet and cover in more sealant?

Thanks

I'd say Yes and Yes!

I'd be tempted to run a neat bead of sealant round the carrier, let it go off, then rivet the carrier back on. that way it'll provide some amount of vibration absorption to combat the metal on metal. THEN go all over it with sealant / plumbers gold etc etc. Overkill? Maybe but why not!!!

I say leave the gasket in place.

From my limited experience I would say it does a good job.

Mine leaked because the carrier had bowed away from the door in between rivets. The design fault was either too great a spacing between rivets or the carrier was not stiff enough. I see from other threads that stretched or badly fitted rivets can be another cause for a gap to develope. No gasket will work in those circumstances.

However, in case you have bow or stretch in the future, while you have the card off it would be prudent to apply sealant along the bottom and two thirds of the way up both sides after you have re fitted the carrier. I used Shell Tixophalte Wet Seal & Fix.

the foam in mine had disintegrated, sealed it all the way around (use a sealant that will set underwater incase there is any damp left in there, or if it rains!) as it was still weeping after i sealed 1/2 way up! buy clips for the doors - they will break

edit : hang on - what rivets? its just screwed on - dont cut the rivets off  - like the idiot who did on my car, they hold the window runners on!

Rivets are on the newer fabias instead of screws, newer meaning my carrier is riveted and its an 04

ahah! make sure u don't cut the window runners off though!
