Having seen the Skoda main dealer fixed price service charge of £139 for my vehicle I rang my nearest to book. However they quoted me £193. On questioning why they are charging an extra 54 quid the eventual answer was that " it's only valid for vehicles 3 to 10 years old" mine is 2 years old.

I questioned what I got for the extra money " more comprehensive service following a different job list and better filters" was the reply

My argument was and still is, how can you be charged more to service a newer vehicle that should have less potential problems than something 10 years old?

Or am I missing the point somewhere?

Ask them to show the difference between the filters :giggle: .  That makes me laugh.  Must some VAG specialists near you who can do the same service at a better price.

My local dealer will happily service my two year old Superb and charge Skoda's National Pricing - £139.

 

Find a better dealer!

All dealers do it. They have some stupid guff about the newer cars being on a specific service regime and then shift them on to a more simple mixture of inspection and major services after four years or so.

It is a massive con and one of the reasons I decided to get in to the new car and service inclusive game. Yeh, I know I'm loosing money in depreciation but I'd rather do that than faff around negotiating service and consumable prices and always feeling I'm being shafted somewhere on the sly. .

A lot of Manufacturers are offering cheaper prices for older vehicles to get more people through the door.

If your local dealer wont match the price then shop around.

The service intervals are as the manufacturers set out,

 

Unless on Variable Servicing to have Oil/Filter changes at almost double the mileage,

 

Skoda do Fixed Annual Servicing Schedules from new.

 

1 year/9,4000 (10,000) miles,  Minor Service,  

2 year/ 20,000 mile Major/Inspection Service. Pollen Filter

3 year/30,000 miles Minor Service, Brake Fluid change.  (then each 2 years)  MOT Time.

4 year/40,000 miles Major Service,  Maybe Spark plugs, Air Filter, Pollen Filter etc.

 

Later things continue as recommended, Belts, Fluids, Filters etc.

 

Its up to people what they want,

Dealer Service or Independent if the Original or Extended Warranty matters to you,

DIY or non VAT Registered if you want.

Yeh, so over these first four years they will flog you a Year 3 service for a certain amount but you will find the equivalent service on a car older than four years will be significantly cheaper. They will use some branding language to make you think you're being sold a different product or throw in some gimmicks on the earlier one to try and up your sense of value ( Ford have started offering Nectar points and free breakdown cover), but there's no getting away that you will be paying vastly inflated prices. Later on the cost of servicing will mysteriously drop because the dealer knows that people tend to go to independents once put of warranty or past a certain point in a car's life. Even at these reduced prices the main dealer will still be expensive, charging about £125 for a service that is basically just an oil and oil filter change with some visual inspections, eg looking at brakes without taking wheels off.

Well that works for them if people are happy to go with the flow.

 

The sensible figure out the costs, or savings.

Do not buy GAP, Paint/Interior Protection,  

but might take the Finance with Service Package and then pay it off.

 

Worlds your Oysters and full of choices,

Some people make more in an Hour than they pay others to do work for them,

so they pay the cost to employ the professional to do what they do,

and then get on with earning to pay the bill.

 

Some people need cars 'Serviced' & Maintained & use Qualified Mechanics & Technicians.

Not just Oil/Filter/Fluid Inspection Report Services,

So do not go were a Fitter/Technician will be charging to do the minimum and oil door and hatch hinges.

Charging for a Bottle of Washer Fluid and not adding it because the Washer Bottle was full,

then not supplying the Unopened/Unused Bottle by putting it in the car.

Make servicing your Skoda simple.

 

Find a dealer who wants your business.

 

Always book it in for the minor £139 service (oil & filter, and visual checks).

 

Spend two minutes prior to booking it in reading the service book in the glovebox. Ask the dealer to replace the following as recommended in the book:

 

Pollen filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, brake fluid, cambelt and pay the extra cost.

 

Simples.

 

This will always work out cheaper than booking it in and hoping that the dealer doesn't take the p**s. Two minutes of homework can save you hundreds of pounds.

Certainly pays to know what is needed and what constitutes realistic pricing so you can respond appropriately to dealers.

Or go to a Basic Car Maintenance Course and do the majority of minor work and general servicing yourself.

& know what you are doing and what others will be doing for you. when you do not have the tools or skills.
