Is this the culprit?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Recently cable tied my top pipes as I could hear a wail/hiss (not siren) on boost.

All noise went away for a while. However it came back last week.. Today I found the below under by bottom tray. I obviously missed tying the bottom one. More than likely this is the culprit for my noise I guess?

Going in for new clutch tomorrow so will sort (tie rap) while up on ramp.

Could well be

I would say it is. I replaced mine with a brand new one(£100~). The car shut up for about 6 months and its back again..wahoo.... :(

more than likely, cable tied all mine together made a difference

Mine is leaking from this exact place, very common from what I've read on here. Going to have a go at 'fixing' it with cable ties once the weather improves.

Some people put self tapping screws through the joint too. Haven't dared myself. Was thinking of trying to get the Technology department in the school that I work in to try design some sort of compressing clamp to hold the pipes together. Even if they are together though, I'm still not convinced you actually get an airtight seal. The Fabia would be a fantastic car had the boost piping been designed better.

Sorry to be really thick, but what is the photo meant to be indicating, at first I thought it was wear going through the plastic

Is this a standard hole/area where it tends to leak oil from the boost pipes or something? I must be lucky but never disturbed my boost pipes (apart from near the EGR side) and I'm pretty sure I've never had any boost/leak issues myself

Have you tried replacing the seals?

It's the bottom intercooler pipe showing its leaking some oil which is more than likely where its leaking very slightly causing the noise. I cable tied all mine apart from the actual turbo. Quietened mine down quite alot and it felt to pull alot better so I would imagine I was losing abit of boost and I think it was my top pipe to the egr that was the culprit.

For those that cable tie, I'd suggest that a cable tie tool( gun) might get the ties a bit tighter.

To cable tie is it one tight on each side of the joint like this fantastic diagram

And then stick one or two joining those two cable ties horizontally thus pulling the pipe joint together?

oohh I can diagram that!

The standard pipe work is a joke got cable ties holding mine together a swell

I put heat shrink on mine. Been the best thing I've done to cure the rubbish leaky joints. Cheap enough too tbh

That's a new one but think I'm willing to try anything now really ****ing me off do the Ibiza with the same engine have this problem

Guys... you'll never beat nature if you keep the original pipework. The oil vapour will always find a way out eventually. It's designed to be as it is, if you really pushed VW/Audi, they will tell you to just change the seals, and they are designed to eventually give way. Every single VAG Audi Skoda Seat has the bayonet connectors, and EVERY diesel pipework will leak vapour oil. If you allow the vapour to leak out the seal, it does absolutely no harm whatsoever (if they all leak, youll be a bit down on power, but not much)....except leave an oil slick of vapour on your driveway, when it rains. The worst thing about the vapour, is how this builds up inside the intercooler. On my Golf tdi 130, I emptied over a cup full of oil! And this is only vapour, condensing inside the system and following gravity to the IC. It will still happen if you buy new silicone piping, chances are it will just pass back to the turbo with a well sealed pipework. The majority will stay at the "bottom" of the piping however, just behind the o/s front wheel, or in the Intercooler. Fitting a catch can is a partial solution, but to be honest, that itself is a bit of overkill and a PITA to remember to empty it. I guess it depends what power you're going for, with a catch can, and if you deem it necessary for you. Diesel engines have a habit of trying to strangle themselves, this is just one irritation of running a diesel.
