Suspect front brake sticking

Featured Replies

My 2010 1.4 TSI is making a bit of a noise which sounds like it's coming from the front offside wheel. Started off as a squeak and has progressed into something louder. The noise stops when I press the brake pedal. When I got out of the car tonight after a 15-mile motorway drive, the offside front tyre and alloy felt a bit warmer than the front nearside. I'm not going to drive it again until I get it checked.

Does anyone know if it's likely to be the calliper or just the pad or maybe even just brake dust?

I bought the car from an official Skoda dealer about 8 weeks ago and have a years warranty. If it's the calliper that's corroded/seized, do people think it would be considered "wear and tear" and therefore not covered by the warranty?

Many thanks.

I had a sticking front brake pad on my 7-year-old 4x4 Octavia shorlty after I bought it earlier this year and the dealer immediately changed the caliper under warranty without a quiblle.  He is an independent Skoda specialist with an excellent reputation.

Warranty states under "What is not covered": Renewal of brake components due to wear and tear or constant use of the brakes".

Sticky caliper is really a case of removal, cleaning, lubrication and compressing/decompressing the piston. I'm sure some will say change the fluid too. But it's a Saturday afternoon job to do both.

When I had a sticking calliper on my old Audi it cost me 1 hours labour at a local indy specialist. in my case It was simply the sliders had become covered in dirt and debris. After a good cleanup and re-assembly the calliper was still working fine when I sold the car some 18 months later.

Turned out to be a small stone stuck in the calliper.  No damage to any of the braking system components.  Dealer charged me an hour's labour which seems fair enough.
