As I can't decide which is better I thought I'd poll other VRS owners.  Gut instinct says the Momentum has better hot performance whilst the Shell has a less lumpy cold idle. Vote away.

Both 99 ron fuels should be better cold starts than 95 ron fuels.

& the same when hot.

Only difference between them should be that you are paying £2.25 or more a tank less with the 'Tesco  Momentum 99'.

& they tell you the Specification of their Minimum 99 ron petrol

& Royal Dutch Shell do not tell you what their additives/detergents actually are in their Shell V-Power Nitro 99 ron.

Other Super Unleaded Petrol in the UK can be Minimum 97 or 98 RON.

I'm trying to get a better feel for the two quoted fuels on the 1.4TSI in the VRS. Please use the vote at the top of the page.

I never use 95RON and will only use 97RON when I've got no choice. The only fuels in the UK that are guaranteed to be at least 98RON are Shell V-Power and Tesco Momentum (unless my research has failed to uncover some rare supplier). I presume your comment about Momentum should have said Tesco Momentum 99 rather than 88.

Sorry edited that now.

They are guaranteed Minimum 99 RON.

There are 98 Ron Minimum Super Unleaded.. BP Ultimate.

& Sainsbury & Esso is 97 ron minimum.

Voted.

I don't fill up with Shell as a rule but haven't spotted any advantage over Momentum on the odd occasion I have used V-Power although the odd tank here and there probably won't show up.

It helps I have a Tesco PFS just round the corner from home..

I use the standard fuel in mine 95 or what ever it is. Seems to run fine on the stuff.

I believe that Skoda recommend that you should use 98 RON in the vRS Mk. 2.  However, I am impressed that it "runs fine" on 95 RON or "whatever it is" ;)

To me it is no contest as Tescos is closer and I do my shopping there. Therefore, points + fuel save.

It'll run fine on 95 - it just runs better on 98/99.  The increase in mpg alone more than compensates for the extra pence per litre in my experience - aside from the improved performance, especially in the upper rev range.

If doing a back to back test, it will take 2 or 3 tankfulls to see the real difference though.

Especially with the deal at the moment - spend over a certain amount in store and get x pence per litre off, with an accumulator as well.  Got 14p a litre off the last fill - not to be sniffed at.

Presumably you would still have got 14p a litre off standard 95 RON? Not that I would advocate the use of 95 RON in a vRS or any other high performance engine.

Now I'm just talking form what I have seen on here... No technical knowledge or reasoning behind it;

I have seen a few threads with people reporting misfires and rough running caused by goosed spark plugs. Each time it turned out that the user was using 95 fuel.

Again I have nothing to back this up other than what I have read on here over the years. I always use 99 and I have never used 95. I would of course use it if I was caught short and 98 wasn't available, but only for a tank maximum.

Just my opinion. For the sake of £2.50 a tank, give it good stuff.

haha well even after the new engine skoda did not tell me about 98+ fuel to put in it. No misfire etc etc. So it'll have 95 in it.

I think it tells you on the inside of the fuel flap to use 98, or at least it does on mine and it did on my old Ibiza too.  Given some of the issues posted on here it seems like its asking for trouble using 95 Ant.

Yep - so not really a valid point

i dont understand why people ask this question, hands down, the best fuel for a performance car, modified or stock should be the one with the higher octane rating? Higher octane lowers the chances of DET (which can happen to a stock car on a hot day to some extent!) even if it isnt mapped for the higher 97-99RON fuel.

Obviously im not talking 102RON haha. although im sure i read somewhere BP have started selling 102RON around the UK.

BTW i understand mapping etc, im just not delving into that as thats a whole different kettle of fish.

For some reason,

the other day the pay at pump was out of order, so had to pay in store, the woman gave me money off this or my next topup, i asked why, she said because i had made an in store purchase.

so im guessing if you buy fuel in store instead of paying at pump you can get money off, this has happened to me on numerous occasions in different shops served by different people, and when playing clueless they have all said the same thing.. because its classed as an in store purchase..

What does it say in your manual or on the filler flap!!??

BP did do 102 ron at limited locations in the UK and stopped again quite a while ago.

You can buy 102 RON & 107 RON for Mototsports,

but you need to count the cost as the same as getting half the MPG as when using the 99 RON Minimum Petrol.

George - you mentioned in an earlier post in this thread that BP Ultimate is 98 Ron

I really want this to be true but are you sure? - my local BP says 97

My preference is for Shell but as mentioned above Shell are secretive about what goes in to their 99 Ron whereas Greenergy ( ie Tesco) are I believe a bit more forthcoming about the fact that they raise the Ron by simply adding ethanol.

Sorry then if only 97,

i have never been in a BP Garage, the only ones i see are frighteningly Expensive by the signed Prices.

& never have needed to use one.

Ethanol is perfectly fine in the right engines, do Royal Dutch Shell not do the Same.

That is the way to raise the MON.

Then the additives like Sodium & Nitrogen.

I would run my car all the time on Alcohol if i could afford.

Or any other better performance fuel.

I save that for special occasions.

I used to run on LPG, and that was 110 RON. or equivalent.

Is there that much Difference between Fuel Producers , Whole sellers & Retailers.

They are in it for Profits surely.  Not always trying for the same customers.

What does it say in your manual or on the filler flap!!??

it say 98/(95) in the flap. Never looked before tbh. Plus I never fill the tank it cost you to get the full tank around when driving. Well that's they go on about to save money on fuel, less weight better mpg.

Ant,

You may pay more later with a damaged engine /plug etc.

Read other threads  on here and gain from other peoples misfortunes, that would be my conclusion .

Hope that helps.

But then you pay to stop and start the engine more frequently filling up with fuel. Plus time spent and possibly extra distance and waiting for a pump.
