replacing brake fluid

Featured Replies

Hey all. I will be replacing the brakes on my car and was going to replace the fluid with upgraded fluid. Question is do I just pour it in and bleed it through or do I empty the system n then put thr new in?

Using an eezibleed or vacuum bleeder will drain the system completly

Where can I get them from?

No worries iv found them on ebay. How much fluid will I need?

Noooooooooooo don't drain it you will airlock the ABS unit,

Just pump fluid out the reservoir is almost empty them top up with new fluid and continue to change,

start at furthest point from reservoir and work forward

So I need to just take fluid from out the reservoir leaveing a little bit in. Then fill up with new and bleed the rears 1st followed by the fronts?

Don't forget to do the clutch too as it is on the same system. There is a bleed valve on top of the gearbox by the slave cylinder.

A litre and a bit, less than 2.

Ok thanks

Use a syringe to get old fluid out first. As previously stated, don't let any air get into abs pump as you will have problems. Old fashioned bleed method works good but only press the brake pedal half way down if you use that method. I place a suitably sized piece of wood under the pedal and have never had any issues.

Whats the idea behind that? I always thought you just pushed it 2 the floor.

That can bugger the seals in the master cylinder.

Ah right cheers for the info.

Replaced the fluid in my son's Vrs last night (been at least 4/5 years looking in the service history). Never had a problem before using the '2 man method' on any of the cars I've done it on over the past 25 years I've been driving, including my own mk2 vrs last year. Read the Haynes and identified which system it had (can be either a mk20 or mk60 and according to Haynes have to be bled in a specific way for each system). Finished up and the fecking pedal is going to the floor. Tried it again to no success so I fear the worst in that's the master cylinder has flipped. Got it in to my mechanic mate this morning for his verdict. He seems convinced it's just air but I'm fearing the worst.

Off Topic but It's been about the same time since the fuel filter was changed, wasn't expecting trouble but thought I have a read in the Haynes and they don't even mention the fuel filter change in the petrol  :S

Was easy enough though and the pipe to filter connections are easier than the bloody things I used to have to deal with on my Vectra.

Id buy 2 litres.

Bleed out some of the fluid then top the reservoir to full again, and repeat untill you see the change in colour of the fluid.

Start furthest away from the master cylinder.

Little tip - I use some hose from a local pet shop that fits perfectly over bleed nipples then what you need is a little cola bottle with a hole in the lid. No mess this way and its like £5 incl the coke itself.  :coffee:

That's why my mate is a mechanic and I'm not.

I must have let the reservoir get too low at one point and it got air trapped in the master cylinder. He tried bleeding it but it wasn't having it then tried the 2 bleed nipples on the master cylinder itself and the air came out and pedal came back. I did read about the M/C nipples but Haynes really only said they need doing if you have lost all fluid in the reservoir (which evidentally I had managed to do). I've always started bleeding from a rear side and then diagonally to the front and vice versa but Haynes reckons that with the 20IE system you go r/r-l/r-f/r-l/r and on the MK60 system it's l/f-r/f-l/r-r/r.

4 calipers

One on top of gearbox for clutch

2 on master cylinder

:)

Bleed them all.

I like ate super racing blue fluid. Blue in colour so easy to change. Not strictly road legal due to being coloured but have had no issues

Just make sure it isnt  ether based as that will slowly eat away at all your rubber hoses!
