Radiator failed again, known issue or am I just unlucky?

Featured Replies

Six months ago I had a leaky radiator in my Superb, new radiator was fitted under warranty.  Last week, the new radiator sprang a leak so I'm now on my third radiator!

I'm concious that the car will be out of warranty in another six months time.  Have I just been unlucky or is this a known weakness on the Superb MkII?

First I've heared of it. What was the cause in each case?

Simply a leak from the bottom of the radiator where the radiator core ends in both cases.  No sign of any external damage in either case.  I put it down to poor manufacturing quality.

Hmm. Google shows some hits concerning the radiator, but nothing. Fairly sure it's a generic VAG-part, and I don't remember any big problems on VW/Audi forums either.

Just your luck I think  :rain:

Thanks, time will tell, I'm just a bit nervous that the car is out of warranty in six months time.

As a matter of interest, do Skoda parts fitted by a Skoda dealer carry a seperate warranty?

Nissens (Denmark) make the best replacement radiators. Don't waste time with any more OE junk form VAG. A burst could cost you an engine - and VAG wouldn't give a toss.

Don't think a replacement part carries extra warranty.

Your best bet would be documenting the issue and trying to obtain a reaction from Skoda UK. Write down your entire story and keep all invoices together, sit down with your dealer and explain your worries (problem recurring out of warranty) Try to obtain contact with Skoda UK and try to get someone to acknowledge that your issues are not normal (good luck with that)

In Belgium we can use something called "making someone culpable", it's basically sending a registered letter to someone (usually the manufacteror) and explaining you hold them accountable for current of further issues. This is the first step in filing a complaint with customer protection services, or even the law in the worst case.

In Ireland all Skoda parts carry a two year warranty. Don't see how they should differentiate between warranty parts and "bought" parts..

Just a point but are the mounting points for the rad correct/ok. As if one is not perhaps it has put a strain on part of the rad. Just a thought.

Hi Guys, about 6 weeks ago had radiator replaced - car was 3yrs & 3mths old!

I was informed it was a stone chip & I would have to pay for repair.

When I took it in I said can I see the radiator as I had looked & looked and although I could see there was fluid leaking I could not see from where.

After topping up when I took it in for diagnosis & when repair took place (almost 2 weeks later) it did not need "complain" and ask to be topped up again - lost less between 100-150ml in the 2 weeks (I did check every few days and could hardly see any change).

However sill me cos I was called whilst it was in and they confirmed it was definitely stone damage - but they did not show me the radiator - typical I was running late & trying to get kids & it was Friday evening.... by Monday, no more rad!

Am I right to be suspicious.... I mean how on earth can a stone get into the engine bay with such force to damage the rad?  Is there a way in???

Anyone else had stone damage?  Or was I "stealered"?

Cheers & I hope its a one off too!!!

Rgds

Stef

Any place worth it's salt would be only too happy to show the damage then again if they are not.......em!

Hello Rotodiesel, moved over to a Superb Mk 11?

Used to love your comment on the Superb 1 section, the amount of stick you used to give us V6 drivers  . Always plenty of sound advice though.

Can we look forward to more of both on this one?

Raptor - just snooping to see what the problems are with these cars. They look pretty good so far.

I still have the old Mk1 1.9PD. It's impossible to wear it out - and if you sort out the design sillies it should go for a long time.

Sorry about the V6 comments...

No apologies necessary, i leant a lot from you thanks.

Looked after my 07 V6 and and got a very good trade in plus a heady discount on a new L&K. Took your advice about changing the cam belts and the water pump. Very difficult to get a definitive position on when to change them so went for 46k

Take care mate hope to see more of your comments

Good to see you here Roto, my trusty 1.9 moved on to a new owner a few months back, hopefully the ali housing for the CR pump will last on the mk2 but at least we are starting to see some mileage ones appear.
