mk1 vrs - no s/h.... risky buy?

hey guys..... as per title really. found a nice looking mk1 vrs with 80k odd on the clock but it has no service history as i guess it was part ex'd. the car looks lovely and clean from what i've seen but im yet to see it in the flesh and check it over. obviously a cambelt and water pump change along with a nice service including all fluids would be first on the list if i did get it.

 

basically should i leave well alone or take a punt if i can get it for a decent ££???

Tough one. Mine had part service history when I got it. But it did have receipts for cam belt and other bits and bobs.

Hasn't missed a beat.

Its always a risk though.

Service history is nice to have, although having it is no sign of the car being looked after.

 

Look at the car closely, check for all the many documented faults that the Fabia can be prone to and buy with your eyes open.

 

It could be a bargain, or a dog, good luck!

I always buy cars on condition and history. Can't say I'd risk one with no history, depends how lucky you feel and how cheap you can get it though I guess.

A lot of people service there own. Best judgement is how many owners it has had relative too its age. 

I bought mine on 114k part service history til 76k, took a gamble but booked it in to skoda and had timing belt and water pump fitted they then done a health check and highlighted that the brake discs/pads need changing so let them carry that out, they then said that the rear bumpstops needed changing so I managed to change and re-new rear top mounts myself, car now on 143k 2 years on and going well, I've done last 3 oil changes and skoda changed the brake fluid, recent alternator, aux belt and battery. do the basic checks oil/water and general condition of the car. might be a bargain, happy looking fella.

I bought mine over a year ago with no service history and 30k later its still going strong and never gave me one bit of trouble

Sometimes the service history is crocked anyway - I recently bought a boxster s with "service history" - the car had not been serviced as stamped  - going forward I will contact the garage that stamped the book.

Depends if you can get £££s off really. If you add up the whole costs including insurance, is the few hundred pounds off enough to sway you?

Noticed you have an Impreza, you'll notice the Fabia isn't (sporty that is).

 

Would suggest widening the scope to include Golf/Jetta and Ibiza. Also the PD140 2.0 16V engines. Drive as many examples as possible before making a decision.

Bought mine with part sevice history but did have a recipet for a cambelt and waterpump etc. Never missed a beat.

I bought mine with no service history and so far no problem it only had on owner and had receipts for belt etc. its up to you but for me it was worth it.

Unless it is mega cheap, I personally wouldn't bother.

 

There are plenty of decent cars for sale to be picky when buying a vRS.

 

Servicing on time with the correct oil is crucial for PD engines to have any sort of longevity.

Can you check with a Skoda dealer the SH on them?

I know certain manufacturer's can check and supply print outs for SH that has been done at there dealers :)

It's at least a 7 year old car, i'd be surprised if it had full mdsh as anyone that conscientious is rare and would have told a buyer that they could contact the dealer or have such a good relationship that the dealer would supply a duplicate book/print out when asked.

Ok :think:  it might have dealer history for some or the majority of its life,who mentioned full dealer history?  :wonder:

 

And ref the owner passing on the info,the OP states he thinks its been a part ex vehicle,so chances are the service history was left in the previous owners possession 

The thing is, even if it has had the first 3 years services at a dealer that'll still leave 4 - 7 years of no history, running with god know what it. All these cars with high miles have been looked after from what I've read, chuck some non PD oil in it and it becomes a different story I suspect. Obviously it could have had full dealer history so it'd be worth a call if the car is in **** hot condition and cheap enough.

Knowing someone looked after it a few years ago doesn't tell you about the year it did 30k and had no service work done and the odo clocked before the MOT or the dash being replaced with half the mileage on it etc. Not everyone understands why you pay a few quid more and use the correct oil on a PD engine, some people have never changed a cam belt or water pump on 7 year old cars and I know one person who thought taking her car for an MOT was a service, so no, missing service history means you assume it's had nothing done to it and you HPI it as it could easily be a CAT C/D (about the only time I am comfortable with a car that has no history).

Did a mileage check on the car and it comes back as mileage inconsistent so I'll be avoiding it now!!! On a plus note got my eye on other with full s/h :)

My father in law has a 2008 C200 CDI. Lovely car, full mercedes service history to 100,000 miles when he bought it. He had it serviced at Mr Clutch for £50. The CORRECT oil and filter would be more than that without labour and profit :D God knows what its running on.
