Creaking mirror when retracting & extending

Featured Replies

My nearside mirror is creaking (sort of clicking/knocking sound) when retracting/extending. It does this from new but It's getting louder and more annoying these days. I have the mirrors set to retract when I lock the car so I want to get this sorted out.

Would some grease on the joint where it pivots do any good? Either that or a trip to the dealer I guess

I'd go to the dealer as lubricating may give dealer opportunity to say lubrication has caused more damage thus possibly making warranty claim void. If they lubricate it, it's down to them.

Mine makes the occasional creak/knock when the mirrors fold, but they operate smoothly and cant say it annoys me greatly.

Id be surprised if most O3's do not do this to some extent occasionally but if it is frequent/loud/causing the mirror motion to be affected then it could be a faulty mirror unit.

I have a suspicion they will be sealed units so would likely be replaced under warranty....they'd just pop your painted mirror cap off and fit to the new housing.

It does it every time but works normally. Will get the dealer to look at it then...

Mine's a bit clicky/knocky too, always has been, is it not supposed to be ?

I'd say no. You should only hear the mirror motors.

Mine occasionally makes a creaking/groaning noise when unfolding but not a knocking or clicking.

My right side mirror housing does the same, but only occasionally. So I couldn't really pinpoint a specific reason for it to happen.

Yeah +1 mine occsionally emit a little squeak, there is also a little knock at the end of a fold/unfold motion as the car cuts power to the motors.

Id expect occasionally a bit of dirt/grit can find its way in and cause additional noise, theres some rubber booting on the mechanism to prevent this but am sure ive experienced this maybe once already with ice on a cold morning.

Id be more worried about repeated loud clonks/bangs or motion that is not smooth when in operation

+1 Since I read this thread have noticed that the nearside mirror creaks a bit. Had thought about a quick spray with silicon, but as Pumatron said that gives the dealer the opportunity to wriggle out of warranty work. If it continues will mention at service time & show them this thread so they know it is an issue affecting other cars.

Mine was squeaking the other week, it has been serviced since and seems to be OK now, maybe the dealer gave it a quick spray with silicon grease :)
