Tools for gearbox oil change - vRS CR

Featured Replies

Hello

Apologies if this has been asked before, I couldn't find it using a quick search.

Is anyone familiar with which tools are required for a gearbox oil change? (Manual 6 speed)

Also, is the drain plug supposed to be replaced as per the engine sump plug?

Many thanks

Phil

Drain plug can be reused. Remove the level plug first just in case. As for tools it will be with a 17mm allen key or a security M14 or M16 spline.

Thanks Tech1e.  I've got all of those so thats a good start.

Not such a good start is that Skoda didn't know which oil I require and the technical line couldn't/wouldn't tell them over the phone, so I need to wait for the dealer to get an email back from Skoda Technical about it!

Gearbox oil for my 6 speed 2010 - Scout, changed last year:

G  052171A2    = 3 Litres, i think it got about 2.7 litres inside.

The oil required depends on the date stamp on the bottom of the gearbox bell housing.

The dealer have me the wrong stuff which I put in but then I queried it after info from this site

I got the date stamp info and got the correct stuff  at no extra charge.

It takes 2 litres.

I phoned Opie Oils; gave them car details and they supplied the oil. Give them a bell, I think they're a sponsor on here. Mine took 2.3 litres in the end.

Thanks for the tips.

The changeover date was in 2010 apparently and my car is an early 2011, so could be either!

I've taken a photo of the info on my box but couldn't find a date.

I would prefer the genuine oil if possible.

The date is 301107.

That pic is identical to mine except the WWO is 5 instead of 3.

I had read that people using non VAG oil (Fuchs etc) had probs with clunky gear changes. VAG oil seems to be the best for these boxes.

I bought Fuchs Titan Sinto-fluid. Before the change my gear shift felt a bit rough. Now it's smooth and feels really fluid; goes in to gear positively.

Checked the spec and it meets VAG requirements. You'll often find VAG will buy things such as oils through well known manufacturers. They won't usually make oils themselves.

Thats the stuff I have in my astravan (gearboxes made of cheese) and its been ok so far but had read that the VAG stuff was really good. Hope all goes well with yours.

Was that the 75w80 stuff?

That's what I thought, but on a 2011 car, that seemed unlikely. After further investigation, I found that the date is in fact stamped on top of the box on a machined plate under the selector mechanism.

I have a picture on my phone which I will post shortly.

Interesting. Skoda UK told me it was on the bottom and made a recommendation based on that.

They seemed unable to tell me where it was! After two emails from the dealer to technical, they identified the code on top.

That said, the change over date was in 2010/2011, so you should have the correct oil either way :)
