Remembering Roland Ratzenberger..............RIP

Featured Replies

20 years ago today was the first day in one of the darkest weekends that motorsport has ever witnessed.

Roland Ratzenberger was killed during qualifying for the San Marion GP at Imola - after going off track on his previous lap, damaging his front wing, he continued to complete qualifying. On the back straight, his front wing broke off and it went under the car. As a result he failed to turn into the Villeneuve Corner and stuck the wall at about 200mph.

Although his death was overshadowed by that of Senna's, some 24 hours later, it did have one lasting legacy - during the customary drivers' briefing, the remaining drivers agreed to form the GDPA to press for improvements to cars and circuits. It's first directors were Senna, Michael Schumacher and Gerhard Berger.

Roland's then team mate David Brabham writes about the accident here: http://www.brabham.co.uk/news/david-brabham-blog-imola-1994/

RIP.

I remember the Weekend very well.

Can't believe it's 20 years ago

A very sad day for Motor Sport, thanks for posting Coops

I remember it as well and can't believe it's been 20 years already.

R.I.P.

Lets not forget the Very Lucky Rubens Barrichello who had a very serious crash at the Same GP

As said - that race weekend will be in many memories for a long time. RIP.

Watching the "Senna" movie, "Rush" and "1" F1 documentary recently - all proved very powerful and moving reminders of how they went racing all those years ago....

I've watched "Senna" and "Rush" but not got round to "1" yet - is it any good?

Definitely worth a watch mate.

Lots of similar footage and parallels with Rush.

I remember that weekend very well, even though it was 20 years ago.

Friday practice was when Barrichello bounced his Jordan along the tyre wall.

Saturday Qualifying was when Ratzenberger died, qualifying was on sky and my mate down the road phoned to say come down to watch it.

Sunday was when Senna was killed.

A tragic weekend after years of no deaths in F1, then two in two days.
