Powered Tailgate operates intermitently

Featured Replies

Car....... I.8 superb estate petrol.

When pressing the centre button on the key fob or the button in the car the tailgate only operates intermitently. It alway unlocks and rises a few mm but then sometimes stops and has to be raised by hand. When pressing the button on the tailgate to close, sometimes it operates fine, other times just closes a short way and stops again.

Anyone had this?

Would fixing  it be covered under the 3yr warranty?

Anything like that would be covered under your warranty.

Had similar problem with mine - motor in one of the arms was not working and it was replaced under warranty

When I read this last night I thought mine had been working absolutely fine, then this morning something very similar happened and the boot merely unlocked and didn't open. When I pressed the button again, and held it, it all opened correctly. I wondered if there was an unlock feature on the fob if the boot button is quickly depressed rather than held down? Will monitor this over the next few days.

And having dropped my son off at swimming twice now where he has taken kit out of the boot and then walked off leaving me to have to get out of the car to press the button to close it I think I need to find someone in the West Mids to make the change to allow the boot to be closed from inside the car and by pressing the fob button.

I had a similar fault within the past week.
Symptoms.....

Electric hatch would open with no problems.
Hatch intermittently failing to close, giving three short warning tones and stopping.
Three short tones.... indication of a fault.

Dealer had car in to check.

One of the struts needs replacing.

Got the car back while they obtain a new one.

BTW... because of my job, I tend to open/close the tailgate abt 10 times a day, so maybe it was just wear and tear

It's rather cable on the rubber cover than a mechanism itself.

I just opened one to see what's inside and can say - the atomic bomb cannot destroy it... mechanically

the previous post refers to a thread I started.

The car was about two years old when it happened.

They replaced one of the struts under warranty.

I think they said the part alone was over £300.00

I see that people are talking about boot lid problems and i have one as well. It could be similar but ill try to explain it the best i can. Today i unloked the car, headlights switched on,interior lights switched on,hazards lights flashed, opened driver door got what i had to get from the car and then closed the door followed by trying to lock the car. Car loked, headlights switched off, hazards lights didnt flashed and interior light didnt switch off..i thought this is because the boot is opened but after i opened it the boot didnt want to close no more. Any ideea why?Mechanical or electrical problem?

As you mention a "boot lid", is this an estate or a Twindoor?

Its a twin door

Its a twin door

OK, what model do you have and the year?

Did you try unlocking the car, then close the bood lid, then lock? Or is the boot lid still wide open?

No matter what i do the boot does not close. Before when i was closing it i just push it down to first click and after that i let it to close itself..now nothing and to open i can open just with the key

Are right, so the softclose mechanism has stopped working? I could be a fuse that has blown? I think its number 28, Electric Boot Lid. Take a look in your handbbok.

I will have a look as soon as i have the chance. Thanks!

Just had my motors changed.

Skoda know about the issue - I was quoted a service bulletin and the motors were already there when I arrived !

Chris

Just found - they have lost the close function on the console button and the keyring

Will take it back - they should be able to fix that ? (Or is it just a VCDS thing)

Had mine done a couple of weeks ago. Have you noticed they make a different noise now? Or is it just me?

If anyone out of warranty has this trouble try cleaning and lubing lightly the rams (struts) just a little bit of WD40 on the silver rods and open and close it as few times, dirt and ambient temps will cause these sorts of issues.

The electric struts were replaced on my (combi) car (by previous owner) at 100,000kms. The cost was horrendous.... over $NZ1000. If they fail again I hope I can convert it to a 'normal' boot.

Hopefully I can have mine replaced and looked after on wstr/extended warranty from the dealer I got it.

It is threads like these that make me glad I deliberately avoided buying a car with the electric struts.

I am sorry for all those who have had problems, I hope they all get resolved soon

Thanks. It really is a cool feature, and handy for letting the dog out of the boot.... but I'd give it a miss next time, especially if you plan on keeping the car for more than a couple of years.

i had a problem on mine where when i locked the car with the original key the boot would open 10 seconds later, i scanned with vcds no faults & it turned out to be a faulty plastic buttons on the key / skoda don't sell the buttons for the superb but if you ask for a vw up 15 plate they sell the separate approx £5, 5 second job to swap over & fault cured.
