siren noise, brand new turbo, help

Featured Replies

Hey guys unfortunately I have started hearing a feint siren noise between 1000rpm and 2000rpm, now I know this is covered a lot on the sight but I thought id ask, as my turbo is a brand new pd150 garret unit and was only fit a month maybe 2 months ago, my car is remapped and has been for 3-4 weeks now and it is only today I have noticed this noise, I have no other symptoms apart from the feeling the car isnt as torquey as when I first had it mapped (may just be the fact I have got used to the power)

Now here are my questions if anyone would like to weigh in lol

1. Has anyone had this problem where it has actually turned out to be a boost leak?

2. I had to "clock" the pd150 unit to make it fit the fabia, im guessing this has voided my warranty?

3. My car has a milltek decat back system (these where fitted about 6 months ago) an air filter and egr blanked off with a remap (fitted 3-4 weeks ago) im still running a standard intercooler atm could any of these cause the siren noise?

The car only has a feint noise between 1k amd 2k revs and then seems to dissappear nor does it make the boo noise on lift off.

Cheers guys and sorry to be a pain.

When you fitted the turbo did you clean all the pipe work?

From experience the siren noise is usually because of things hitting the turbine and damaging them. Saying that it doesn't mean the turbo is failing etc..

Hi hutchy thanks for the reply, yeah I fitted the new turbo because the old tripple k turbo failed, so when I fitted the garrett unit I checked all the pipe work for bits of blade and turbine shaft etc and am about 99% sure they where clean of debris, my friends leon has had the siren noise for months and is still going strong, this said my failed triple k turbo never made a sound when it went so I guess its pot luck? Lol fingers crossed its one of those times the turbos not failing lol

1: Why did the original turbo fail?

2: Did you replace the oil feed pipe at the same time?

Hey benjiman thanks for the reply, the original turbo blades wedged them selfs into the housing :-( I dont think we replaced the oil feed pipe as it seemed fine :-/ in hind sight I should have changed it, the old turbo never made a sound though and the new one only started making this sound recently, could it be the oil feed pipe starving the turbo?

Quite possibly..  Normally good practice to replace feed pipe at same time - I'd do it ASAP.

Oil pressure is a big reason for turbo failure.

Did you clean the main air feed pipe from the airbox down the back of the engine?

It has a downsize rubber attachment with a taperd edge, I'm glad I removed mine as it was coverd in small metal filings from when my turbo failed. I bet tones of people miss this pipe and don't remove the small plastic piece were all the metal hides!

After fitting the turbo did you set actuator and stop screw?

Changing it is usually a warranty condition.

Benjiman - Going to order an oil feed pipe today and hopefully fit it at the weekend if I get the time! cheers

Hutchy - Ill take a look at that pipe as it seems this could be something I over looked, cheers dude

Coskev - hi mate, no I didnt as I was told it was all ready set? Do you have to adjust it on every turbo fitted? I thought it was only hybrids that needed them adjusting? Cheers

Rwbaldwin - gonna change it today and hope it doesnt get any worse lol fingers crossed, cheers

Thanks for the replys guys I know ill let you know how I get on, ive also spoke to someone who says to check all my boost pipes (especially the ones to the intercooler and the one off the ic that goes to the turbo) as there prone to leaks and all though I dont have any other symptoms of a boost leak its possible this could be causing the noise? Does that sound reasonable?

I thought my hybrid was on its way out (wiring noise) found out yesterday its my alternator belt tensioner thank god!

But you've clocked it,pretty sure that would alter the settings as the turbo would have been set up on the bench.

Or have you only clocked the compressor housing? And not the hotside/core?

Steve opc - bet that was a massive relief haha fingers crossed mines an easy fix like that! :-)

Coskev - only the compressor housing, there where 6 (if memory serves correct) bolts I had to losen then rotate the housing about 90 degrees so that the intercooler pipe would fit

Spoke to a turbo company today and they said check the gasket between the manifold and down pipe, and any exhaust or boost leaks, also the egr blanks

Funnily enough someone had commented the other day that it sounded like the exhaust was blowing but imho I cant hear it blowing then again I do think im going deaf at times lol needless to say I will be having a look this weekend, also ordered a new oil feed pipe - should be here on tuesday :-)

Hey guys just a little update if anyones still following, after searching for leaks and replacing the oil feed pipe etc it made no difference to the noise :-( I just decided to put up with the noise and hope for the best, I had just learnt to live with the noise and accepted it as something that hadnt seemed to get worse or better untill I got to work this morning and realised that the siren noise seems to have started to make the noise whilst idling now (only very feintly) this is very strange :-/ maybe a vac leak? Or my turbo really is about to die spectacularly :-( watch this space and keep your fingers crossed for me lol

I very much doubt it will die spectaculary, if it does what can you do, overworrying about it certainly won't help avoid it will it ?

Either take it somewhere and have it worked on (turbo replaced again properly preventatively then shift on your potentially still valuable turbo, even for hybridisation) or just see how it goes.

Well my used original turbo has been a little like this, ok there is difference in that its got some impressive miles on it (113K)

but I've lost count of how long now exactly its been a little noisier, what 30-40K?? So the impending doom scenario, I don't think happens and is forum panic mongerers at work.

If you take it steady on the old girl, its certainly not likely to happen straight away. More likely to become noisier in winter where is struggles more in colder air, mine isn't bothered me right now.

Dominorising I agree worrying about it wont help at all, but its hard not to haha 30-40k with the siren noise? I suppose I can take some reasurance in that :-) hope mine lasts that long at least, do the hybridised turbos suffer from this noise?

Thanks for replying

How long do standard turbos usually last as mines is at 125k and still pulling like a train :/

Whistling noise at idle is normal.

Hey grr666 its not a whistling noise its a siren noise at idle like you rev it up it goes WHOOOO oooo oooo idle ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo lol (if I work out how to post videos ill post ones as its useless trying to describe a noise in wirds hahaha)

It will be the egr delete that makes it whistle. In my logic the now inactive egr plunger will make air passing past it whistle when it would have been open otherwise.  Get a proper delete pipe and it should stop.  It is also possible you have a boost leak as the crap standard vag pipes have been distubed to fit the new turbo.  A leaking lower boost pipe is a common problem after having the cam belt replaced aswell as they disconnect the bottom boost pipe to do the belt.  My car is suffering a leak on the lower boost pipe and it is next on the to do list.
