1.9 tdi gearbox gone

Featured Replies

Hello all

I have a Bxe engine mounted on my car, 1.9 diesel 105bhp 77kw.

My gearbox has 6 years and died, it's seems like a train when i'm driving.

I really need your help on this one. My gearbox is according to Etka code JCR, unfortunely too short for high speeds.

Can anyone tell me what different  gearbox code can fit my engine BXE?

Thanks

The first thing you need to do is look at the gearbox code on the options label under the boot carpet or on the gearbox. Are you in the UK? Some gearboxes are only available in some markets. Are you sure it's the gearbox and not a bearing?

A swap with a reconditioned/rebuilt one might be worth investigation.

Now that you guys are talking about it, and since I have the same 1.9TDI engine with the same 5-speed transmission, I was wondering if it is possible to replace it with the 6-speed manual? Somewhere I red that it might even be possible to do some change to the existing gearbox, something like changing certain parts inside it, which would make it a 6-speed. Does anybody knows something about it?

Yes the BXE engine uses a JCR gearbox. Mine had the same fitted. They are quite difficult to source. It would be better to get it reconditioned.

The 6 speed gearbox is very different. It is a much larger and heavier unit with different mountings. I'm not sure if the bell housing unit on the engine will allow fitting of the 6 speed gearbox. I also believe the driveshafts are different for 5 and 6 speed gearboxes.

What do you mean when you say your gearbox is "too short" for high speeds? The gearbox you already have in has been designed to run at or in excess of the car's top speed -- I haven't heard anyone else complain that the gearbox is holding the car back. Both my cars are 1.9, the later one is a BXE, and there is absolutely no problem with the gearbox not able to cope with the standard power of the car.

If you wanted a vehicle that is "more capable" of higher speeds then you should be driving a high powered version, not a 1.9TDI!

I assume he may mean he doesn't like how high the engine revs at higher speeds.

Our old Cordoba with the old long gearbox would be doing about 1800rpm at 70mph.

I don't know what the manual 5 speed revs at 70mph? I assume around 2,200 ish rpm?

My wifes 6 speed A3 gearbox went on her ASZ engine. Cheapest option by far was getting the old one reconditioned. We were really pleased with it, and it was done in a day.

That's funny... ours was a 6 speed on an ASZ and ours also went!

Catastrophic bearing failure inside the box. Ours couldn't be reconditioned due to damage to the housing so bought a reconditioned one. Add in a new clutch and DMF while you're at it and it left a bad taste in our mouth!

The gearbox place said they did 2 or 3, 6 speed vag boxes a week so they kept parts on the shelf, never ever did a 5 speed. They said they were made of swiss cheese. It was 1st and 2nd gear that failed on ours.

Exactly the same as ours! 1st and 2nd started crunching. Had a gear oil change which help a tiny bit then it just started banging and knocking one day and that was that!

Yes I did some searching and there are a LOT of 6 speed gearboxes that go bang.

I dont drive the A3 much, i prefer the Octavias, but according to SWMBO she just couldnt pull away from a roundabout, no noise, no crunch just like 1st and 2nd were not there, although it felt like they selected. Lucky it didnt go bang.

Hello,

the easiest and cheapest way is 6 speed conversion to EuroTuning

Add another one to the list! my 2010 TDI CR VRS gear box is shot I think. Only about 40k miles on the clock so I'm trying to get some good will from Skoda problem is they can't figure out what the issue is!

There was a kind of knocking noise coming from the car (which stops when you apply the clutch) so I sent it into the skoda garage. That was about 4 weeks ago now!

First of when they stripped the car and diagnosed as needing replacement fly-wheel / clutch and bearing.

Then after car was back together the knocking noise was still there. Next step was a gearbox specialist had a look and couldn't see anything wrong so thought it was faulty new part so tried swapping out the fly-wheel/clutch and again no difference.

They've had it stripped again a few times since now with Skoda Ireland/manufacturer involved trying to figure out the problem!!.

Its looking like a new gearbox required but their taking their time coming to that conclusion, should I be expecting Skoda to pay for the new gearbox, surely must be dodgy gearbox of the production line for it to go after 40k miles??
